BATTLING ON THE WATER were Ely racers Kael Richards and Nick Mattila last weekend.

Ely racers may have found some home lake advantage in the snowmobile watercross races held on Fall Lake last weekend.
Kyle Lakner took first and Nick Mattila was second in the Semi Pro Open class. Mattila also took fourth in the 800 drags.
Former Ely resident Krista Maki-Zurn took first in the Women’s 800 Ovals and Joe Swanson finished fourth in the Pro Open race.
Other Ely racers included: Kael Richards, who took fifth in the Pro Stock and in the Semi Pro Open; Kurt Mattila finished seventh in the Semi Pro Open; and Cassie Swanson who was fifth in the Women’s 800 Oval. Jacob Champpa and former Ely resident Ian Vanvickle competed in the Semi Pro Open.
The races were sanctioned by the International Watercross Association.
Travis Erickson of Embarrass won the Last Man Standing race that benefits the ALS Foundation. Erickson took the winnings and donated that money to the ALS Foundation as well.
The Boundary Waters Cup novice race featured 13 racers. First place went to Joe Wood of Becker, MN. Second place went to Tyler Douvier, Albany, MN. Third was Kory Johnson of Hibbing.
“I thought the weekend went really well,” said event committee member Kristi Mattila. “Our organization is excited about the Boundary Waters Cup race. Everybody was really into it and we’re hoping to grow it for next year.”
