A popular recreational running event was dominated by Ely’s high school cross country teams.
Senior Teddy Pierce was the overall winner of the event held Saturday around the Trezona Trail, and the first four male finishers were all members of the Section 7A champion Timberwolves squad.
In the female division, Ely senior standout Caroline Homer was first while cross country coach Jayne Dusich was second.
The overall title was decided by less than a second, as Pierce won in 26:00.5, edging out teammate Ben Gustafson (26:01.2) at the finish line.
Those were among the highlights of the race around the Trezona, which was held a week earlier than usual this year to coincide with Labor Day, rather than Harvest Moon Festival, weekend.
The event, which started and ended at the Miners Dry House at the Pioneer Mine complex, attracted 58 runners while a concurrent walk around the trail brought out another 15 participants on a sunny, warm, late-summer morning.
Herb Dillon of Ely was the first walker to cross the finish line, winning the event in 48:06.5. He was followed by Roger Skraba (53:01.1) and Dan Dusich (54:02.6) to form the first three in the men’s division.
Sarah Mattson of Britt was the first female walker (57:46.1) while her daughter Annikka was right behind in 58:46.6. In third was Myrna Malm (1:06.06) of Cook.
