Ely prevails in battle of unbeatens, secures top playoff seed

The Ely Timberwolves overcame an early deficit, a few mistakes, several penalties and a rugged Northwoods team Wednesday night to keep its perfect record intact.
In a battle of unbeatens, Ely downed the host Grizzlies 20-12 before a huge crowd in Cook.
A stingy Ely defense held Northwoods to just 21 second-half yards while the Wolves played keep-away down the stretch, running out the final eight minutes with a sustained drive that secured the program’s 16th consecutive win and the number-one seed in the upcoming Section 7 9-man playoffs.
But it wasn’t easy.
“It was a tough football game,” said Ely Head Coach Brian Lamppa. “Our kids showed a lot of heart.”
Ely had two touchdowns called back by penalties, threw two interceptions in the end zone and coughed up the ball with a third-quarter fumble.
