Ely cross country teams both going to state; football team set for first home playoff game

For a second straight year, the excitement is building at Ely Memorial High School.
Two Ely teams are on their way to a state competition and a third begins its quest this weekend.
Thursday, both the boys and girls cross country teams placed second in their respective divisions at the Section 7A meet in Cloquet.
As a result, both will advance to state and run at Northfield, on the campus of St. Olaf, on Saturday, Nov. 5.
Both Ely teams went to state in 2015 as well, part of a dramatic fall season that also included a trip to the state semifinals for Ely’s high school football team.
The cross country team is holding up its end of the bargain for a repeat, while the football team starts postseason play Saturday - at Ely School Stadium.
The unbeaten Wolves, 8-0 this year and winners of 20 of their last 21 contests take on local rival Northeast Range at 2 p.m. in a Section 7 9-Man semifinal clash.
Ely is heavily favored to move on to the section title game, which will be held on Friday, Nov. 4, at 4 p.m. in Esko against either Cook County or Northwoods.
The Wolves have been ranked among the top-10 teams in the state all season long in a weekly poll, and Ely is rated first in 9-Man by way of the Quality Results Formula used by the Minnesota State High School League to seed section tournaments.
The Wolves were eliminated in the state semifinal round a year ago, and should they get that far again this year they, and their fans, will be in for quite a treat.
Both the state semifinal and championship rounds will be played in Minneapolis at the brand-new US Bank Stadium, home of the Minnesota Vikings.
