Ely boys, girls cross country teams win academic honors

Ely’s high school cross country teams had a season for the ages - with both advancing to state competition.
It turns out the Timberwolves are high achievers in the classroom as well as on the course.
Both Ely teams earned All-Academic awards as determined by the state’s cross country coaches association.
The Ely girls team won Academic Gold distinction while the boys were deemed Academic Silver winners.
Gold awards go to teams with a grade point average of 3.75 or higher and the Ely girls team scaled in at a near-perfect 3.95.
Team members figuring into the average were Erin Bianco, Ryne Prigge, Caroline Homer, Emma Terwilliger and Evelyn Bercher.
The boys team nearly matched the girls, recording a 3.72 team GPA.
Teddy Pierce, Simon Stouffer, Ben Gustafson, Ethan Hasz and Chase Eilrich were the team members whose grades were used.
The academic honors come on top of a banner year in which both the Timberwolves boys and girls teams placed second in their respective Section 7A meets and advanced to the State Class A event, held Nov. 5 on the campus of St. Olaf in Northfield.
