Eleanor Caroline Anderson, 89, of Ely, dies

Eleanor Caroline Anderson died peacefully at Carefree Living in Ely, MN with her family by her side on January 30, 2018. Eleanor was born on April 25, 1928 in St. Paul, MN to Eric and Eleanor (Severin) Berg. Eleanor attended Washington High School in St. Paul, MN and Ely Junior College where she met her future husband John.

Eleanor and John Anderson were married in Ely on July 12, 1947. Together they had five children, John (Lee), Ely; Mark (Jill) Apple Valley, MN; Rick (Polly), Ely; Dan (Lucy), Cloquet, MN; and Bob (Marilyn); Seattle, WA. Eleanor worked hard raising five boys, and was active in the Ely Public Schools through the PTA. El and John, spent many hours driving her boys to hockey and basketball games all over the Iron Range. She and John enjoyed many beautiful summers on Burntside Lake with family, resort guests, and later with her 13 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren. Eleanor was a member of Grace Lutheran Church. She was a proud 60-year member of the Sewing Club: “Love and truth is what holds our group together.” She could knit a pair of socks and mittens in what seemed like minutes.

Her husband John preceded Eleanor in death. A very special thank you to all of the staff at Carefree Living, who took such good care of Eleanor. Also, thanks to the hospice staff, Dr. Joe Bianco, and Lorie Dubbin for all they did for El.

In lieu of flowers, gifts to Northwoods Respite Hospice Partners of Ely are suggested.

A celebration of Eleanor’s life will take place this summer.
