James L. Heikkila, 71, of Babbitt, dies

James L. Heikkila, 71, of Babbitt, died Tuesday, Sept. 30, 2014, at St. Raphael’s Health & Rehabilitation Center in Eveleth. He  was born June 30, 1943, in Ely and was employed at Reserve Mining Co. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 6, 2014, at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Babbitt.

Thomas K. Rayman, 66, of Ely, dies

Thomas Keil Rayman was taken “Home” on Thursday, October 2, 2014 in Ely. He was born in Austin, MN on March 14, 1948 to Dr. Frederick Rayman Jr. and Jacqueline (Callies) Rayman.
Thomas graduated from Austin High School in 1966 and later earned degrees in Psychology and Biology from Winona State. Thomas was an Eagle Scout. He loved to read and had written a letter to one of his favorite authors, C.S. Lewis, and was quite pleased to receive a letter in return. He was a lover of the theater and acted in many plays throughout his lifetime. He also enjoyed swimming, soccer and fencing as a young man.

Rodney K. Johnson, of Ely, dies

Rodney K. Johnson, 84, passed away peacefully at home in Ely on Friday, September 26. He was born in Duluth, MN, October 30, 1929, to John E. and A. Mabel (Isaacson) Johnson.  
He grew up in several states but also spent many childhood years with his grandparents, Jacob and Marie Johnson in Ely and at the homestead on Johnson Lake.  Rodney graduated Denfeld High School, Duluth, MN, and later acquired his knowledge for a successful electrical career, graduating from Dunwoody Institute, Minneapolis, MN.  He willingly provided for his wife and children during their time at home.  Later, he attended and graduated Robert Tilton’s Bible School, Dallas, TX.  Rodney opened a Bible Satellite School in the old Ely Theatre, and was ordained with his wife through the Association of Faith Churches and Ministries, Broken Arrow, OK, August, 1984.  They started the Ely Word Church and he served as senior pastor until his illness forced a sabbatical.

Jon David Folz Sr., 80, of Ely, dies

Jon David Folz Sr., 80, of Ely, died Saturday, September 13, 2014 at Evergreen Terrace in Grand Rapids with his family by his side. Jon was born on May 28, 1934 to Henry and Mae (Tschida) Folz in Moose Lake, MN. Jon spent his childhood and the majority of his life in Ely. On September 30, 1953 he was united in marriage to the love of his life Carol Coey. Together they raised seven children. He began his career as an underground miner at the Zenith Mine. He then worked 30+ years at Reserve and Northshore Mining in Babbitt, MN.  Jon was an avid outdoorsman, who loved hunting, fishing, trapping and spending time at the cabin on Foss Lake with family and friends.  One of his proudest achievements was obtaining his pilot license. For the past 17 years Jon lived in Panama City Beach, Florida, a place he loved and called “Paradise.”

Dale F. Loushin 65, of Duluth dies

Dale F. Loushin 65, of Duluth passed away Sunday, Sept. 14, 2014 with his loving family by his side.  Dale was born on May 25, 1949, in Ely, MN to Frank and Verna Loushin.
Dale was a graduate of Ely Memorial High School. During school he started dating Diane, shortly after graduating they were married. They lived in Ely for some years, before they moved to Duluth where they resided ever since. Dale was a fun and loving father, grandfather, and a devoted husband.  He was very well liked, with a great sense of humor and a soft heart. He made a connection with everyone he met and talked with, and was loved by all.
Dale was preceded in death by the love of his life, Diane; parents; brother, Gary; brother-in-laws: Tony, and Paul; and niece, Mona.

Flora Mae Erickson, 82, dies

Flora Mae Erickson died Saturday, September 13, 20014 at Essentia Health St. Mary’s Medical Center in Duluth, MN. She was born September 7, 1932 to Erwin and Mary (Sterns) Kibbler of Boy River, MN.
She owned and operated “Flora’s Beauty Shop” in Benville for 32 years. She was a member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Babbitt, MN where she was active in the quilting circle. Flora enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping, handicrafts, gardening, reading, crosswords, scrabble, travel and the opera. She loved music and played the piano, accordion and guitar. She was a kind and generous woman with a beautiful smile and a great sense of humor. She had recently visited with family and friends, some of whom she had not seen in years in her hometown of Boy River, MN. Her children were so grateful to have celebrated her 82nd birthday with her, just a week before her passing.
Flora was preceded in death by her parents, Erwin and Mary; husband, Earl; and sister, Mary Ann Lake.

Vincent R. DiNino, 95, dies in Texas

Vincent R. DiNino, Director Emeritus of Bands at The University of Texas at Austin, and Director Emeritus of the Longhorn Band, died peacefully at home in Bay City Texas on September 9, 2014, with his wife at his side.
There will be a memorial halftime performance of the UT Longhorn Band and the Longhorn Alumni Band at the October 18, 2014 football game in Austin Texas at Darrell K Royal - Memorial Stadium, and a public memorial service will be held on October 19, 2014 at The University of Texas at The Nancy Lee and Perry R. Bass Concert Hall.

Frank L. Lozar, 85, died Sept. 7, 2014 in the Twin Cities. He was born July 5, 1929 in Ely to John and Marie Lozar and attended school here. He later became a research chemist. Survived by two sons and sister Agnes.

Rosemarie P. Buchner, 85, of Ely dies

Rosemarie P. Buchner, 85, of Ely, passed away on Thursday, September 4, 2014. She was born March 17, 1929 in Ely to Agatha (Carr) and Simon Marolt. She graduated from Ely Memorial High School. She married Joseph E. Buchner on July 14, 1951 in Ely.
She was a homemaker and member of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, American Legion Auxiliary and Slovenian Women’s Union.
Rosemarie was a dedicated wife, mother and grandmother. She enjoyed hosting family gatherings where her apple potica was her specialty, a tradition that was passed down from her mother and she passed down to grandson Scott and niece Shannon.
Rosemarie worked with her husband Joe in the family aircraft repair business and was well known in the aviation community for her quality fabrication work.
She was an avid sports fan and never missed a game her grandchildren played. She loved to watch the Minnesota Twins, Vikings and Green Bay Packers.

Ruby M. Tomlinson, 86, of Ely, dies

Ruby Margareta (Pearson) Tomlinson, 86, was born in Chicago, IL on October 25, 1927 and passed away at the Boundary Waters Care Center in Ely on September 4, 2014.
She was preceded in death by her parents Folke and Elsie Pearson.
She is survived by her husband of 64 years, Walter; sons and daughters-in-law, Jay and Jeanne, Don and Margie, Scott and Jackie, Gordon and Sue; grandchildren, Ben (Erin), Laura (Wilhelm) Harm, Amy, Kent, Erik, Kyle, Christine, Julie; and five great-grandchildren.
