Send state Revenue jobs to Ely

Ely Echo editorial

TO: Minnesota Department of Revenue

FROM: Ely

SUBJECT: Jobs

Straight to the point: You need somewhere to locate up to 50 new jobs. Our response: Ely is your best choice.

Here's five great reasons to put those jobs in Ely.

1. Go with what you know.

Your managers in Ely will tell you about the productivity levels and low rate of turnover from the excellent workforce we have here. You have a presence here already and by all accounts, it's been a success. When you put up a building in the Ely Business Park, there was discussion at the time about adding on to the building in the future. Let's take a step in that direction.

2. The Range DFLers will be most appreciative.

Governor Tim Pawlenty is very familiar with the Iron Range delegation. Those die-hard DFLers and the rest of their party have taken control of the House and Senate. Wouldn't it be nice to have a bargaining chip the next time Tom Bakk and the boys come in? Putting 50 jobs in Greater Minnesota will keep the Rangers happy, at least for now.

3. Your employees will thank you.

Being able to spend over an hour a day in traffic may be a benefit to some of your employees who enjoy a dose of road rage every day, but for the sane people, it's not a good thing. Imagine a work environment where you can bring your boat and trailer with you and be jigging for walleyes 10 minutes after quitting time. And for those concerned about leaving the big city, tell them we're about to have three cul-de-sacs built in town. Just like the suburbs.

4. Department benefits continue.

You could check in with the Ely office via the phone, by email or even by fax, but there's nothing like being able to come up north and enjoy some of the good life yourself. With more employees in Ely, it's all the more reason to come up for some first-hand observation. Be sure to stop by the desk of the person who brought the boat to work. Mention the words "promotion" and "take me fishing."

5. Sleep better at night.

Worrying about your employees getting mugged on a bus or shot at while walking to work is something no manager should have to have to worry about. Barring doubling the police force in the metropolitan area, sending as many employees as you can to the safe zone of northeast Minnesota is the best thing you can do for your conscience.

There you have it. Five great reasons to locate up to 50 jobs in Ely. But you knew all of that already, didn't you? Oh, and we talked to the employee with the boat - just name the day and you'll be reeling in walleyes. Well, as long as it's after May 12, unless you bring the head of the DNR with you.
