by Pam Roberts
The Winton Recreation Club's Halloween Hayride went so well that they thought it would be cool to host something again in December.
Cool it was and even quite a few degress less than that, but many hearts were still warmed and drawn together on the festive 20 below evening of last Saturday.
People gathered at the Winton Community Church and had sloppy joes, chips, cookies and treats with Santa and the Slovenian Choir to start off the evening. Hay rides departed every half hour taking people around the town of Winton to see the sights and vote for the best decorated homes.
The highlight of the tour was saved for last. The real meaning of Christmas at the Stable (Recyle building) of Winton where the Star shown bright on a Silent Night, a Holy Night.
It was freezing cold, but they were still bold... Mary and Joseph, Wisemen, Shepherds... and the 'sheep' who came to the Winton Bethlehem, just east of Ely to see the baby Jesus, a stand-in baby doll was bundled up. Silent Night, all is calm (and chilly),... until, "HERE THEY COME!" was shouted by the wisemen with their walkie talkies... "Here comes the truck! Everybody! To your places!"
Manger folks regrouped out from the camping trailer where coffee and hot chocolate was served, shepherds regathered from walking the 'goat/sheep' or were huddled in the back of a van til on cue all would run to their places around the manger.
The CD player worked well on the first run thru with Oh Holy Night filling the air. The wisemen grabbed their presents and everyone stood still.
The touring truck pulling the lit up trailer with folks seated on hay bales who were in awe at the site of the manger. The wisemen proceeded with their gifts, placing before the new born King. The truck pulled away off into the darkness to return in half an hour or so with a new group.
Manger crew dispersed and froze a little more and a little more til a wiseman went and found a turbo heater and warmed up the back stage of the manger scene where everyone including goats gathered between the last few run-throughs. The CD player also froze so there were a couple silent runs til the player was thawed out enough to get the disc out and a wiseman pulled his truck up close to the stable and put the disc in the truck and turned up the volume... the last couple run thrus were complete again with music.
The goats ate tinsel off the angel and some off the tree, and they did manage to grab the bow off the wise men's present... and it was still an O Holy Night... the stars were brightly shining... Everyone got into their part including the goats who were sheep on a couple run-thrus and by the last scene they were a donkey and cow. And baby Jesus slept quietly... while the cattle were lowing... And don't you think Jesus must have looked down with a warmed heart and thought he never saw a manger scene like that one before? Just wait til next year...
