| Big fish on Ely area stringers
by Nick Wognum
A knock-em dead line-up of entries came in this week as the June bite roared into full force in the Ely area.
Leading the way was a 20 lb. 15 oz. monster northern pike caught by Chris Pechacek of Ely in Shagawa Lake and checked in at the Great Outdoors. This lunker went 41.5 inches on the scale after inhaling a sucker minnow.
Dan Miller of Embarrass used Eagles Nest Lake as his fishing hole to reel in an 11 lb. 4 oz. northern pike that was checked in at Vermilion Fuel and Food.
Showing that you don’t have to tromp through mile-long portages or paddle for hours, 11 year-old Colton Bina of Ely traded in his baseball bat for a fishing pole last week and landed a 14 lb. 9 oz. lake trout out of Burntside Lake. A silver spoon was the lucky lure and the 34-inch fish was registered at the Great Outdoors.
Two nice lakers came from Snowbank Lake. An 8 lb. 1 oz. trout caught by Ed Kangas of Ely was entered at the Great Outdoors while Paul Center of Normal, IL stopped in at Smitty’s on Snowbank with a nice 7 lb. 1 oz. trout.
In the walleye category Paul Ellmers of Burlington, IA pulled a 9 lb. 15 oz. specimen out of Little Long Lake and brought it into Spirit of the Wilderness Outfitters.
Bob Schley of Iron, MN nailed an 8 lb. 5 oz. walleye in Armstrong Lake just off of Hwy. 169 and checked it in at Vermilion Fuel and Food.
Trudi Shaw of Soudan, MN went up the road a piece to catch a 7 lb. 8 oz. walleye in Eagles Nest lake. That catch was also registered at Vermilion Fuel and Food.
There were two smallmouth bass over four pounds that made the list this week.
Jeff Hoffman of Valparaiso, IN brought back a 4 lb. 8 oz. smallie out of Crooked Lake, entering the contest at Skube’s Bait and Tackle.
Jonathon Gust took his fish to the same place, but only had to go to Shagawa Lake to hook a 4 lb. 2 oz. smallmouth bass.
In the Catch and Release category there were three 36-inch northerns released as well as a 30-inch walleye.
The northern pike were caught and put back by Jonathon Brooks of Louisville, KY out of Garden Lake (entry at Skube’s Bait and Tackle); Mike Tessau of Reinbeck, IA out of Farm Lake (Timber Trail Lodge) and Bill Doyle of St. Paul (Spirit of the Wilderness).
Brooks also entered the contest by way of a 30-inch walleye he released back into Birch Lake, which will host the seventh annual Walleye Whamma fishing tournament on June 17. Tickets are $20 up to Juen 14 and $25 after that. Over 40 prizes are given away in the event. Pick up your tickets at Blomberg’s in Ely or Babbitt.
This week we announce the winners of the first section of the North Country Angler Fishing Contest. Each lucky angler gets a check for $25. This week’s entries, the first in section two, will make for some high standards to beat.
Area guides report the action is heating up, with walleyes often found in as little as six feet of water. Bait your hook and try your luck today!

Hi, I am Richard Brooks, the brother of Johnathon Brooks who entered the 30 inch catch and release walleye. I know that state record is 17.8 pounds and there was another walleye from basswood entered but but the looks of it iy was far smaller and skinnyer than my brothers. She(the walleye) was up in a river, a late spawn female and she was fat and very very thick. I dont think that any walleye will be caught that big the rest of the season. It is a once in a lifetime fish. I dont think that I will catch a walleye that big the rest of my life. It had to be close to 13 or 14 pounds, I mean it was so fat from feeding on those minnows. Thanks Richard
