Helvi E. Dojan, 99, of Mahtomedi, MN, dies

Helvi E. Dojan, 99, of Mahtomedi, MN, passed away peacefully on April 12, 2017.
Preceded in death by husband, Arnold; and daughter, Joan Hadley. She will be sadly missed by children: Donna (Warner) Esterberg, Russ, Phyllis (Rich) Tillit, Harold (Jeannie), and Paul (Kellie); 13 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, 7 great-great-grandchildren; sister, Melia Korpi; numerous nieces and nephews.
Helvi was raised on a farm and was fond of her cows, chickens, dogs and cats. As a young woman, she loved to play baseball and was quite good at it. She was an accomplished knitter and cook. She particularly enjoyed cooking Finnish foods. She worked as a cook at the Ely Hospital and Stillwater Hospital. After she retired from the Stillwater Hospital, she baked apple pies at the Pine Tree Apple Orchard until she was 89 years old.

Morse town board votes to help fund Blandin Broadband project

The Town of Morse board voted to contribute $2,500 to an effort to bring broadband internet connections to township residents.
Soderberg brought up a $25,000 match needed for the Blandin Broadband Grant of $72,000.
The Town of Morse would benefit from the project which seeks to provide improved internet access in the area. The supervisors would like to see internet access improvements for people in the township.
The motion came after concerns were aired over when the township would see direct benefits. Supervisor Terry Soderberg said the first step will be to provide broadband in downtown Ely.
A motion was passed to approve $2,500 to the Blandin Broadband project with a request for a written timeline for improvements in the Town of Morse.

Lt Col. Theodore J. Labernik, USAF, Ret. 83, of St. Cloud, MN dies

Lt Col. Theodore J. Labernik, USAF, Ret. 83, of St. Cloud, MN - June 8, 1933 - April 7, 2017.
Lieutenant Colonel Theodore (Ted) John Labernik passed away peacefully with his beloved wife by his side, Friday, April 17, 2017 at the St Cloud Veterans Affairs Medical Center in St Cloud, MN. Ted was born to Rose (Veranth) and John Labernik in Ely, Minnesota. He was married to Mary Sue Fay on July 5, 1958 in St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Ely.
Ted is survived by his wife, Mary, of 58 years and five living children and their spouses: Debra (John) Curry (Colorado Springs, CO), Linda (Tom) Himmelberger (Puyallup, WA), Laura Fay, Colonel USAF, Ret. (Alexandria, VA), Daniel (Carol) Labernik (Fargo, ND) and Steve (Karla) Labernik (Spencer, IA). He is also survived by ten grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Ted was preceded in death by his parents, brother Kenneth, and daughter Susan North.

Marvel L. Klimek, 87, of Babbitt, dies

Marvel L. Klimek, 87, of Babbitt, died Sunday, April 9, 2017 at Carefree Living in Babbitt after her determined battle with dementia.
She was born April 10, 1929, in Long Prairie, MN, to Louis and Olive (Maland) Patzoldt. She grew up in Long Prairie and graduated from Long Prairie High School. On Nov. 1, 1947, she was united in marriage to Elwin Klimek in Millerville, MN. Marvel spent her life operating businesses that she owned with her husband; Al’s Bus Lines in Babbitt, Klimek Enterprises, Red Carpet Motel and Klimek Mail.
Marvel was a volunteer and active in her community, was a previous board member at the Ely Hospital, a past Trail Administrator for Taconite Spur Snowmobile Trail System, a Cub Scout and Brownie leader, and a devout Christian. At the age of 65, she obtained her pilots license. She enjoyed painting, being at the cabin at Birch Lake, visiting the guests who stayed at the motel and especially spending time with her family.

Strategic Planning Session March 13, 2017 (Bd approved 4-10-2017)

A strategic planning session was held at 4:00 p.m. in the Memorial Media Center,
Ralph Brauer was the facilitator. The following were present: Anne Oelke, Molly Olson,
Jim Lah, Tom Omerza, Ray Marsnik, Julie Hignell, Jeff Sundell, Kevin Abrahamson,
Megan Anderson, James Pointer, Jeff Jankowski, Penny Jankowski, Scott Kellerman,
Kathy Udovich, Jason Kelley, Heidi Mann.
On the agenda: 1. Opportunities/threats; 2. Goal Setting; 3. Summarize
One goal was set as follows: As it relates to facilities; ISD No. 696 intends to maintain
safely, efficiently, and responsibly, its buildings and grounds.
The next session will be held on Monday, April 10, 2017, at 4 p.m. in the
Memorial Media Center.

Helen Mary (Skufca) Sampson, 88, of Fridley, dies

Helen Mary Sampson, 88, of Fridley, passed away on Sat., April 8, 2017. Helen is preceded in death by daughters Emily and Amy; parents, Joseph and Mary Skufca; brothers: Don and Joe. She is survived by children: Mark (Diana) Sampson and Carolyn Sampson (Kathy Connelly); grandsons, Adam and Judd (Jessica); 3 great-granddaughters. Memorial service will be held on Sat., 4/22/2017, at Miller Funeral Home, 6210 Hwy 65 NE, Fridley, MN, at 11 AM with a visitation one hour prior. In lieu of flowers, memorials preferred to Fairview Hospice or the Susan G. Komen for the Cure foundation.
