Ely students set for Homecoming

Homework, lectures and tests are only part of what’s in store this coming week at Ely Memorial High School.
Indeed, the usual coursework may have to make room for plenty of fun as students celebrate an annual rite of fall - Homecoming Week.
The celebration is already underway, and a full week of festivities will culminate with a slew of events on Friday, Sept. 29.
That’s when the Homecoming parade will be held on Sheridan Street, and when the state-ranked Timberwolves host Mt. Iron-Buhl in the Homecoming football game.
But football and a parade are just part of a loaded celebration. It actually began with the announcement of royalty candidates and pre-Homecoming pep rally on Friday, Sept. 22.
Students were scheduled to decorate the halls over the weekend. They will gather Sunday night at the football field from 7 to 9 p.m. to play “Capture the Flag.”
Students will dress in various garb each day of the week culminating with Red and White Day on Friday. Other themes are Beach Water Safety (Monday), Twin (Tuesday), Prom/Slob (Wednesday) and Generation (Thursday).
A donut social is set for Monday afternoon, perhaps outdoors if the weather cooperates, and Homecoming royalty will be crowned in a Tuesday pep rally that’s set for 10 a.m.
The high school volleyball team hosts Duluth Marshall later Tuesday (7 p.m.) in a “Pack the Gym” night, while the cross country teams host their lone home meet of the season at 4 p.m. that day at the golf course.
Various class competitions are in the works, including kickball during advisory period on the softball field.
Students will decorate floats during the evening at the school’s bus garage, and another pep rally is in the works on Friday.
The parade will include Homecoming royalty, floats and more and will go down Ely’s Sheridan Street at 4 p.m. That leads up to the football game as the Wolves (3-0) meet section contender Mt. Iron-Buhl (2-1).
Royalty will be introduced and the floats will parade around the field at halftime of the game.
Saturday evening is the Homecoming Dance, from 9 p.m. until midnight at the high school cafeteria.
