It was a week full of milestones for the Northeast Range/Ely high school girls swimming team.
The Nighthawks placed seventh at Saturday’s Taconite Invitational, improving on their performance from last year, while Tuesday marked the team’s first home meet of the season in Babbitt.
Because of construction at the Northeast Range school, the pool has been closed and the Nighthawks have practiced for weeks in Aurora.
Tuesday’s meet was the first time the swimmers got to compete at home and head coach Jason Limp said “the girls did a tremendous job at our first home meet of the season. We had a lot of great individual swims but the real standouts were our relay teams. I think the girls responded well to being back in their pool, plus it was Parents’ Night for us and the girls wanted to show their parents what they can do.”
Brooke Pasmick had victories Tuesday in both the 100 backstroke and 100 freestyle, while Kayla Mellesmoen sprinted to victory in the 50 freestyle.
Laura Pasmick won the 200 freestyle, while both Pasmicks joined Shayla Zaverl and Mellesmoen on a winning 400 freestyle relay foursome.
In the 200 medley relay, Zaverl, Mellesmoen, Maarja Faltesek and Brooke Pasmick combined for the win.
At the Taconite, held in Aurora, NRE had 46 points and finished in front of both Chisholm and Eveleth-Gilbert in the nine-team event.
“The girls did really well,” said Limp. “We took seventh out of nine teamswhich is an improvement from last year. It’s always fun competing with the area teams in a big meet like that, and it was fun to be back at Mesabi East again. We had some good individual swims and some really great relays. I’m impressed with how well our girls are doing this year, especially since we just got back into our home pool.”
In the 200 freestyle relay, NRE took sixth with Faltesek, Tesla Humphreys, Zaverl and Mellesmoen putting together a time of 2:01.78.
NRE scored seventh-place points in the 400 freestyle relay, with Humphreys, Brooke Pasmick, Zaverl and Mellesmoen finishing in 4:30.32.
Kelly Thompson joined Faltesek, Brooke Pasmick and Zaverl on an eighth-place 200 yard medley team (2:31.31).
Individually, Mellesmoen was 11th (28.4) in the 50 freestyle and Brooke Pasmick took 11th in the 100 backstroke (1:16.78).
