Ely Echo’s website now features a daily sports report from editor Tom Coombe, and the Echo is exploring internet broadcast streaming for selected games involving Ely High School and Vermilion Community College teams.

Susan (Susie) Lynn Bradford, a long-time Tulsa area resident passed away peacefully on April 16, 2024. Susie was born on October 8, 1952, in St. Paul, Minnesota, the daughter of Raymond and Bernice Hyrkas.

Susie grew up in Ely, Minnesota and graduated from Ely Memorial High School in 1971. She later became a successful travel agent in San Antonio, Colorado Springs, Houston, and Tulsa.

Susie was a loving and caring wife for over 44 years to her husband, Don. She was a deeply devoted mother to their son, Nick, and her son, Chad Manos.

Susie was the Sunshine of the family. She was a ball of fire that lit up a room like no other. Her whimsical personality was contagious to all. She cared for others, especially children, and the elderly. She nurtured family and friends, without hesitation, through their trials and tribulations.

She loved traveling, ice cream, watermelon, movies, and large buckets of popcorn.

Susie is survived by her husband, Don Bradford, Broken Arrow, son, Nick Bradford (Brittany), Santa Clarita, CA, son Chad Manos (Nicola), Norman, OK, brother, Rich Hyrkas (Anne), Duluth, MN, sister, Sharon Rolle, Minneapolis, MN, brother, Jerry Hyrkas (Sharon), Parker, CO, and grandchildren, Zach Bradford, Lydia Bradford, Lennon Bradford, Mazzy Bradford, and Bowie Bradford.

We miss you already Susie

Mary Lou (Sundell) Carlson, age 88 of Duluth, passed away on April 13 at BeeHive Assisted Living in Duluth. Mary Lou was born in Ashland, WI on May 10, 1935 to August and Edith (Saari) Sundell. She was a graduate of Duluth Denfeld High School and married Robert “Bob” Carlson on July 6, 1957 in Duluth. Mary Lou began her working career at Western Electric in Duluth followed by many years in sales at Paper Capers, Engwall’s Florist and Peterson/Anderson Florist.

Mary Lou was a member of the Duluth Chamber of Commerce Ambassadors where she was awarded Ambassador of the Year. She also received the Outstanding Service Award from the City of Duluth and a Certificate of Commendation from Governor Rudy Perpich.

She was active with the Brownie and Girl Scout troops at Grant Elementary School where she received the Bronze Scout. Mary Lou was past president of the Duluth Y Wives.

Following their retirements, they built their home on Eagles Nest Lake 4 in the Ely area and spent many years in the Ely Community. Mary Lou was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Ely and Trinity Lutheran Church in Duluth.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Jim Sundell.

Mary Lou is survived by her husband, Bob; twin daughters, Deann (William) Munson of Duluth and Luann (Carl) Munson of Duluth; two grandchildren, Aunika Munson of Minnetonka and Jorgen Munson of Golden Valley; a sister, Betty (Roger) McKeever of Hermantown and beloved extended family. Mary Lou’s family would like to thank all the staff at BeeHive Assisting Living for the wonderful and loving care they provided, as well as Gentiva Hospice.

Visitation on Thursday, May 9th will be from 10 a.m. until the 11 a.m. Celebration of Life Service at Grace Lutheran Church 5454 Miller Trunk Hwy, in Hermantown to follow. Pastors Christoph Schmidt, Roger Munson and Bill Fossom officiating. Burial in the Minnesota Veterans Cemetery-Duluth to follow. In lieu of flowers, memorials to the Alzheimer’s Association, 4960 Miller Trunk Hwy. #700, Hermantown, MN 55811 or the Worship and Music Committee at Grace Lutheran Church in Ely, 301 Conan Street, Ely, MN 55731 would be appreciated.

Albin Medved, affectionately called Al, Bine, and Ata, passed away at the age of 86, in the loving arms of Jesus while in hospice care at his Plymouth home. His wife Albina and their family created a serene environment for his final days. Born in Trboje, Slovenia, on February 17, 1938, Al escaped Yugoslavia with his family in 1945 to avoid the Communist uprising. They spent nearly five years in a British-controlled displaced persons camp in Spittal, Austria, before immigrating to the United States in December 1949. With the assistance of sponsors Teresa and Ann Gillach of Pineville, MN, the family settled in Biwabik, MN, where Al graduated from high school in 1957. He then attended Virginia Junior College for two years before transferring to the University of Minnesota, where he earned a degree in Electrical Engineering. While working at Honeywell, Inc. as a patent draftsman, he attended William Mitchell College of Law and obtained a Juris Doctor, later handling intellectual property matters at Honeywell. Among his accomplishments was a successful lawsuit against Minolta for patent infringement on the “Auto Focus” feature in cameras.

Upon retiring from a distinguished career at Honeywell, Al and Albina traveled to their favorite destinations and were gracious hosts. They took pride in building homes—a Medved family legacy—and enjoyed their winter residences in Naples, Florida, and Snowmass, Colorado. In the summer, Al cherished his time at the home he built on White Iron Lake in Ely, Minnesota.

Albin was deeply involved in Slovenian cultural activities. While living in Biwabik, he founded the organization “SAVA” (Slovenski Akademiki v Ameriki or Slovenian Academics in America), named after Slovenia’s major river, to connect with friends from the displaced persons camp. The inaugural convention in Cleveland, Ohio, drew a large attendance and continued annually for several years, earning him the title “Father of SAVA.”

Al’s grandchildren—Conor and James, twin sons of Jim and Cassie Ahlin; and McKenna and Oskar, children of Mary and Patrick Ralston—provided endless joy. He was also dearly loved and known as “Uncle Al” by his nephews and nieces.

Al was preceded in death by his parents, Kristina Breznik and Franc Medved, and siblings John and Kristine. He is survived by his wife, children, grandchildren, brothers Frank and his wife Mary, Miro and his wife Karen, and sister Bernadine and their families.

Mass of Christian Burial 11AM Saturday, April 27, 2024 at the Parish Community of St. Joseph, 8701 36th Ave. N., New Hope. Visitation one hour before prior to Mass.

Axel, a nearly eight-year-old arctic wolf with a bright white coat and an excitable personality, was euthanized on Sunday. He was a popular ambassador at the International Wolf Center, teaching thousands of visitors about wolf behaviors and adaptations.

On Friday morning, April 19, wolf care staff reviewed security camera footage and observed Axel having a seizure. He was moved to the retirement enclosure, which allowed staff to closely monitor him 24 hours a day.

On Saturday night, he exhibited a few behaviors that led staff to conclude he was feeling worse, but he still kept eating and consistently greeted the wolf care team.

The Center’s veterinarian, Dr. Kristine Woerheide, was consulted and helped develop a plan for a blood draw so lab work could be completed at the nearby Ely Veterinary Clinic in Ely, Minnesota. Unfortunately, the lab work confirmed that Axel was in severe kidney failure. The effects of extreme kidney failure likely contributed to his seizures.

After consultation with the wolf care team and Dr. Woerheide, it was agreed that because of Axel’s complex medical condition, the irreversible kidney failure and concerns about his quality of life going forward, humane euthanasia was the only option.

Axel passed away surrounded by his wolf care team.

“This is a big loss for all of us, but our team came together to support each other and make the right decision for Axel,” said Krista Woerheide, the interpretive center director in Ely.

“Axel is already greatly missed by our care team and everyone who knew him, but we are certain that we made the right decision for him,” said Wolf Curator Giselle Narváez Rivera. “We also made sure that his last day was peaceful and that he was surrounded by people who shared a strong bond with him.”

Axel and his littermate, Grayson, came to the International Wolf Center in 2016 from a facility in Canada. Grayson is still a member of the Exhibit Pack. Axel, Grayson and their packmates have educated tens of thousands of visitors at the Center in Ely and thousands of people worldwide through regular YouTube videos, wolf logs and webcams.

“Our ambassador wolves allow people to observe real wolf behavior, which can inspire learning and dispel myths about wolves,” said Grant Spickelmier, executive director of the International Wolf Center. “People also build strong connections with our ambassadors, which makes the loss of Axel hard for our whole community.”
