Anderson, relays give Ely girls a boost

Ely had an individual winner and two first-place relays at a May 6 high school girls track meet at Virginia.The Timberwolves’ big day included a winning effort by senior Julie Anderson in the 3,200 meter run. She finished first in 12:33.Anderson also was part of the Wolves’ first-place 3,200 relay, joining Raychal Zupancich, Casey Sovil and Jenna Klein to win in 10:33.Ely also got a win in the 1,600 relay, as Klein, Kelly Chaudoin, Carolyn Freeman and Ali Schulze teamed up for a run of 4:27.6.The Wolves added a second in the same relay, as the combination of Schulze, Taryn Cunningham, Tomi McDonald and Lexie Barker gave Ely a one-two finish.Freeman and Sovil both contributed second-place finishes for the Wolves.Freeman was the runner-up in the 300 hurdles in a time of 51.5 seconds. Sovil, meanwhile, ran a 2:34 in the 800 to take second overall.Ely’s Rachel Berg landed a third-place finish in the shot put with a throw of 29-9.In the 800 relay, the Wolves’ quartet of Schulze, Cuningham, Raychal Zupancich and Jen Zupancich was fourth (2:01.8).Chaudoin took fourth in the 800 (2:41) and Freeman placed fifth in the 100 hurdles (19.0).Other Ely participants were:• 100 hurdles - Brittany Harris, 21.8;• 100 dash - Mary Anderson, 15.1; Aimee Loisel, 16.7;• 1,600 run -Sarah Markwardt, 6:41; Emma Furness, 6:52; Maren Gotchnik, 8:15;• 800 run - Jessie Loisel, 2:58;• 200 dash - Jen Zupancich, 29.7; Mary Anderson, 29.7; Tomi McDonald, 35.0;• Shot put - Laura Schulze, 25-0;• Discus - Berg, 77-4; Aimee Loisel, 64-9;• Long jump - Mary Bruels, 12-0; • Triple jump - Bruels, 28-8.
