Ely’s Katie Spangler finished in the middle of the pack at last week’s Section 7A high school girls golf meet.

The ninth grader, making her second straight section appearance, shot an 18-hole 109 during Tuesday’s event at Giants Ridge.

That was good enough for 22nd in a field of 44 golfers.

“She finished right in the middle, which is kind of where she should have been,” said Ely Head Coach Rob Simonich. “She would have liked to have done better, but she did well. She had a really good year which is what’s important.”

The golfers battled cool and windy conditions in the morning, and Spangler struggled on the first nine holes, carding a 59.

She recovered on the back nine with a 50, but her total of 109 was still well off the pace needed to advance to this week’s state meet at Brainerd.

The cutoff for the state meet was 93.

“She’s young and she’s capable of doing that (advancing to state),” said Simonich. “Hopefully she’ll continue to work on her game and get another chance.”

The only East Range Conference golfer to advance to state was Shanel Pfutzenretuer of Virginia.

Duluth Marshall won the team championship.
