School Board Minutes <BR><BR>March 10, 2008<BR><BR>The regular meeting of the School Board of Independent School District #696 was called to order at 7:00 p.m. by Chairman Marsnik. On roll call the following directors were present: Erzar, Hogan, Kellerman, Marsnik, Sorensen, York-Jesme. Absent: None. Student Council Representative: Jeremy Boedeker.<BR><BR>Moved by York-Jesme, seconded by Hogan, to change the practice of charging full price at half time for basketball and football. Motion tabled. Supt. Anderson will draft a policy addressing the situation and bring to the Board at the April meeting.<BR><BR>Moved by Kellerman, seconded by Sorensen, to approve the consent agenda as follows:<BR><BR>-Minutes of the regular meeting held on February 11, 2008.<BR><BR>-Financial reports: February - Total monthly receipts: 533,622.99; total monthly payroll: $223,546.69; total fringe benefits: $183,825.12; invoices: $333,163.04; total monthly expenditures: $740,534.85; monthly revenue over expenditures: ($206,911.86).<BR><BR>-Donations and gifts: 1. $25.00 from Wells Fargo Foundation Educational Matching Gift Program to be used at the school's discretion, 2. $200.00 from the Ely Education Foundation/Louise and Bill Trygg for the elementary and high school media centers, 3. 27" used TV from Vermilion Community College to be used by the Early Childhood Family Education program, 4. $250.00 from Wilderness Wind Canoe-A-Thon for high school and elementary art classes, 5. $750.00 from Wilderness Wind Canoe-A-Thon for student programs at the school's discretion, 6. $150.00 from Wells Fargo Community Support Campaign/Employee Donations to purchase elementary education supplies; Maria Gesicki, Megan Gibney, Riana Hegman, Lorie Kienitz, Donna Niskala, Pamela Prijatel - $25.00 each, 7. $1,152.87 from Washington Elementary PTO to purchase 52 State books, library cards and reading quizzes for the elementary media center and Mary Johnson's 4 th grade class, 8. $28.00 from Washington PTO for the 6 th grade field trip to Giant's Ridge, 9. $150.00 from Wells Fargo Foundation Educational Matching Gift Program for the purchase of elementary education supplies, 10. $68.00 from Wise Guys Pizza Inc. January Wednesday Night Pizza Fundraiser to be used at the school's discretion.<BR><BR>-Hire Jim Wittrup (Year 3, $2227.00 divided by 2 = $1113.50) and Emmett (Year 4, $2351.00 divided by 2 = $1175.50) as shared assistant baseball coaches.<BR><BR>-Re-format of Policies 050, 051, 210 with no language changes.<BR><BR>-Resignation of Kari Podominick, paraprofessional, effective March 5, 2008.<BR><BR>-Hire Nicole Caliri as paraprofessional effective March 10, 2008.<BR><BR>-Field Trip for Grade 6 to the Environmental Learning Center in Finland May 14th through May 16<BR><BR>-Hire Albert Palombi as bus driver (2 hr. position) effective at the start of the 08/09 school year.<BR><BR>-Recall Todd Hohenstein from Unrequested Leave of Absence for a full time science teacher position for the 2008-2009 school year. Motion carried.<BR><BR>Moved by Erzar, seconded by Kellerman, to approve the Resolution discontinuing and Reducing Educational Programs and Positions. For: Erzar, Hogan, Kellerman, Marsnik, Sorensen, York-Jesme. Against: None. Motion carried.<BR><BR>Moved by York-Jesme, seconded by Sorensen, to approve the Resolution Relating to the Termination and Nonrenewal of the Teaching Contract of Michael Haller, a Probationary Teacher. For: Erzar, Hogan, Kellerman, Marsnik, Sorensen, York-Jesme. Against: none. Motion carried.<BR><BR>Moved by Erzar, seconded by York-Jesme, to approve the Resolution Proposing to Place Tamia Moe on Unrequested Leave of Absence. For: Erzar, Hogan, Kellerman, Marsnik, Sorensen, York-Jesme. Against: None. Motion carried.<BR><BR>Moved by Hogan, seconded by York-Jesme, to approve the Resolution Proposing to Place Robert Simonich on Unrequested Leave of Absence. For: Erzar, Hogan, Kellerman, Marsnik, Sorensen, York-Jesme. Against: None. Motion carried.<BR><BR>Moved by York-Jesme, seconded by Erzar, to accept the 2009/2010 school year calendar as presented with the possibility of a change if the legislature changes the start date of school to before Labor Day. Motion carried.<BR><BR>Moved by Erzar, seconded by Kellerman, to offer ISD #361 I'Falls a contract in the amount of $58,000 for the superintendent services of Don Langan. Motion carried.<BR><BR>Moved by Erzar, seconded by Sorensen, to award the elevator bid to Lenci Enterprises Inc. in the amount of $232,400. For: 5. Against: 0. Abstained: Hogan. Motion carried. Bids were also submitted by T & M Construction Inc. - $237,200 and H. G. Harvey Constructors Inc.-$256,000.<BR><BR>Treasurer York-Jesme reported on the Course Diversity Fund endowment fundraising. The endowment will be managed and distributed by the Ely Education Foundation. Funds will be used to pay for high school classes that would otherwise not be offered.<BR><BR>Member Erzar reported on AFSCME negotiations. Next meeting March 1 9th.<BR><BR>Treasurer Jesme reported on negotiations with the Principal Association. Both AFSCME and the Principal negotiations will be discussed in the closed session following this meeting.<BR><BR>Supt. Anderson reported and discussed the District's financial future (2008/2009 revenue forcast).<BR><BR>Upcoming meetings: Tuesday, March 18, 2008, Safety Committee meeting - 2:00 p.m.; Tuesday, March 18, 2008, Meet and Confer meeting-3:00 p.m. (tentative); Tuesday, March 18, 2008, Special Board meeting - strategic planning discussion - 6:30 p.m.; Wednesday, March 19, 2008, Negotiations with AFSCME - 3:00 p.m.; Spring Break March 21-28.<BR><BR>Correspondence/informational items:<BR><BR>-Thank you from Don Andersen of ADM Group.<BR><BR>-Letter from City of Ely Mayor, Chuck Novak, regarding the JFK Bldg. heating.<BR><BR>Moved Erzar, seconded by York-Jesme, to go into a closed session immediately following this meeting to discuss negotiation strategy.
