The Ely Cemetery Committee invites the Public to the formal dedication of the Ely Cemetery Memorial Gardens at 11:00 a.m. on Memorial Day, Monday, May 30th. The creation of these gardens involved volunteer commitment of nearly 100 youths and adults from throughout Minnesota who joined together to create a memorial garden to beautify the cemetery and sound buffer adjacent to the Joint Maintenance Facility. The Cemetery Committee also devised a means of providing continuing maintenance as individuals, families and civic organizations have "adopted" the flower beds. The project provides an excellent example of how engaged private citizens can add lasting beauty and value to their communities.

The dedication will be at the Ely Cemetery and will immediately follow the Memorial Day Ceremony conducted by the Veterans of Foreign Wars at 10:00 a.m. A reception will follow in the lobby of the Vermilion Community College, 1900 E Camp St.

For more information about the project, to volunteer or contribute in the future please contact Sandra Nyman, Ely Cemetery Committee Chair at 218-365-4936 or Pat Koski, Memorial Garden Chair at 218-365-5630.

Ely Echo 5/21/2011
