Julia Marie Mavetz, 89, dies

Julia Marie (Chimzar) Mavetz, 89, of Minneapolis, formerly of Ely, beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and sister, passed away peacefully and gracefully into eternity with her loving family by her side on June 26, 2014 after a courageous battle with cancer.
She was born at home on February 6, 1925 in Ely, Minnesota. Her birth almost went without doctor assistance due to a big snowstorm.  She lived her entire life in Ely until she was 87, when she moved to Catholic Eldercare at MainStreet Lodge in Minneapolis to be closer to her children.
After high school, she worked at Veranth’s Lumber Company and Oliver Mining Company as a secretary where she typed 110 words per minute with zero errors on a manual typewriter! She was very intelligent, had perfect grammar, spelling and lovely penmanship.   She was extremely proud of her Slovenian heritage and cooked many foods to celebrate her roots.
She was married to John F. Mavetz on October 18, 1958. She was a loving mother, devoted Catholic, gardener, avid reader and homemaker.
She was preceded in death by her husband John in 1999, her parents: Lucas and Katarina Chimzar; brothers: Joseph and Frank and sister-in-law: Dorothy Chimzar.
Julia is survived by her children: Kay (Keith) Rhein; Diana (Mike) Petrich; Janice (Todd) Guenther and John E. (Tracey); grandchildren: Nicholas (Jaci) Petrich; David (Cheryl) Petrich; Bethany and Matthew Rhein; Jill and Erick Guenther; Anthony and Malyssa Mavetz; great-granddaughter: Madeline Ann Petrich; sister: Catherine Chimzar; brother: Lucas Chimzar; sister-in-law: Lee Chimzar and several nieces, nephews and friends.
Mass of Christian Burial on Tuesday, July 1, 2014 at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Ely, Minnesota at 11 a.m. with visitation from 9 to 11 a.m. Interment in the Ely Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials preferred. A luncheon with the family will follow.  Family arrangements have been entrusted to Kerntz Funeral Home of Ely.
