Frances Jean (Loushin) Grahek, 90, of Ely, dies

Frances Jean Loushin Grahek, 90, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, July 10, 2015 in Ely Bloomenson Community Hospital. She was the youngest of nine children, born on October 29, 1923 in Ely.
She married Steve A. Grahek on Dec. 30, 1950 and she lived most of her life in Ely as a mother and homemaker. She enjoyed caring for her family as well as cooking, reading novels, working crossword puzzles and, of course, baking - especially her homemade apple potica which has been been sent all across the U.S.A.
Frances so loved animals and nature. No matter what the weather you could always see her walking her furry best companion, her dog Teddy. She often called these walks her “serenity” time where she was often praying and reflecting on her life.
She also loved to dance to her favorite polka songs. On weekends you could see Fran and Steve cutting the rug at Dee’s Bar, gliding along the floor as one.
After her children grew up, Fran worked in Vertin’s Dining Room for many years as a waitress/hostess. She so enjoyed meeting new people and hearing their many experiences. After Vertin’s, she stayed at home nursing and attending to her husband’s needs as he was battling cancer. The love and strength she showed during this period was a true example of God’s strength in her.
After a while she went back to work part-time for Irresistible Ink where she displayed her beautiful penmanship and formed many new friendships until her retirement.
Left to honor her life and remember her love are her five children: Stephen (Patty) Grahek of Andover, MN; Mary (James) Hild of Federal Way, WA; Sharon (Jerry) Hoberg of Craig, CO; Stephanie Moore of Ely and Damian Grahek of Ely; grandchildren: James Harri, Jordan Grahek, Jacob Grahek, Ryan Grahek and Carley Grahek; as well as several nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents, Frances was preceded in death by her husband Steve; three sisters: Jenny Deyak, Mary Loushin and Angela Loushin; her five brothers: John, Stanley, Theodore, Frank and William Loushin. As well as her furry friends: Dolly and Abbie.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Sat., Jul. 19, 2014 at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church with visitation an hour earlier. Family arrangements by Kerntz Funeral Home.
