Violet May Aldrich, 80, of Ely, dies

Violet May (Wadsworth) Aldrich, 80, of Ely, passed away on Wednesday, November 19, 2014 at her home surrounded by her family. She was born July 2, 1934 in Coldwater, Michigan. Her parents were Ralph Wadsworth, Allie May Williams, and stepfather Matthew Offenbecher.
Violet graduated from Union City High School with the Class of 1952. On April 16, 1955 she married Douglas L. Aldrich. She had lived in Ely since January 1973. Prior to living in Ely, the Aldrich family resided in Athens, Michigan where Violet raised her three children and worked as a legal secretary for Transamerica Insurance. She was very active in her children’s lives, serving as a Cub Scout den mother and working with her daughter Catherine in the 4-H organization. Throughout her life, Violet was active in her church and taught Sunday school for many years.
Violet was a devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother who took great pleasure in caring for her family and dedicated her life to those whom she loved. While she could never stay warm in the northern Minnesota weather, she kept warm by having her family close to her heart and her house full of people. She especially enjoyed spending summers with her grandchildren at the lake and sharing her time with her great-granddaughter, who always made her laugh.
She and Douglas enjoyed traveling to visit family in Michigan, their children in Virginia, and retreating from the cold Ely winters on the beach in South Carolina. She also enjoyed life on the lake with Douglas, accompanying him on many fishing trips but never boasting about her talent for catching the biggest fish. She was also an avid reader and enjoyed sharing her love of books and classic Hollywood film with her family. Above all, she never needed anything more than her family in her home to be happy. Her family is very thankful for the time they had with her and she will be missed by all.
She is survived by her son David Leon (Lori) Aldrich, Ely; daughter Catherine May Aldrich, Ely; daughter-in-law Jane (Doug) Aldrich Ashburn, Virginia; granddaughters: Devon Lucille (Brady) Luthens, Ely and Andrea Stephanie Aldrich, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; and great-granddaughter Lucille Andrea Luthens, Ely; sister Lucille (Bill) Waters, Coldwater, Michigan and nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband Douglas Leon Aldrich and son Douglas Alan Aldrich, her parents Ralph Wadsworth, Allie May Williams, and stepfather Matthew Offenbecher.
