Twin Iditarod mushers have Ely connection

This year’s Iditarod ceremonial start will include two young mushers with an Ely connection.
Cheri Beatty of Lakeville, MN, who has a cabin on Moose Lake near Ely, sent us this story of how her twins will be at this year’s Iditarod sled dog race in Alaska.
Identical twins, Carlie and Chloe Beatty, fell in love with dogsledding at the age of 10 when their parents took them on their first ride.
It was beyond question for the two of them that dog-mushing would be a part of their future.
Not having a team of their own however, they had to get resourceful. The girls saved up money for harnesses, bought a small sled at a garage sale, and began training their two cocker spaniels.
They were relentless drill sergeants and quickly found that treats thoroughly advanced their plan.
Needless to say, the cocker spaniels gained a few pounds and in the process, started pulling things around the yard on a sled!
