Delores (Dolly) Lorraine Karasti 89, dies

Delores (Dolly) Lorraine Karasti 89, the oldest member of Winton, MN came to the end of her incredible journey at the Ely Bloomenson Community Hospital on Wednesday September 9, 2015.
She was born February 12, 1926 to Toivo and Mary (Honkala) Levander in Ely. Her childhood years were spent mostly on her grandparents farm in Embarrass. At the age of 16 she mustered her sisu, ventured out to California where her mother was working in the shipyards. On April 14, 1944 she was reunited with and married Frank F. Karasti in San Fransisco, California. After their marriage, they spent a year in Hawaii which she always felt was paradise.
After his stint in the Navy they relocated to Winton, his family home. Together they built a home and raised five children. Her biggest joy in life was being a wife and mom. She was most proud of her Finnish heritage. Along with being bilingual, she was an accomplished seamstress, great gardener, amateur artist, carver, cook and baker. She had a knack for making the most awesome children’s clothes using her own patterns as well as garments for the adults. She also made several quilts and lap blankets which were personalized for each family member. Her home was always warm and cozy displaying all her works of art.
Survivors are daughter, Susan (Rudy) Scufsa and their children: Michael, Wendy Varey, and Amy (Bob)Kellogg of Ely, daughter-in-law Denise Scufsa of Fargo, sons: John (Barbara) Karasti and their children Kasey and John Jr. Karasti of Side Lake; Frank(Yvonne)Karasti of Lakeland and his children: daughters Kim Breimeier and son-in-law Paul Breimeier of Winton and Bridget Karasti of Minneapolis; Jeff (Mary Jo) Karasti of Winton, Todd (Meredith) Karasti of Duluth and their children Lance, Bryce and Chase Karasti.
She is also survived by several great grandchildren: Adam Myers, Clayton Varey, Cole and Courtney Kellogg, Kali, Brady, Parker and Reese Scufsa, Caleb and Eli Anderson and Calvin Breimeier. Last, but not least, a great great granddaughter: Kiley Hill of Chisholm.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her much loved step-dad John R. Hill, three brothers, and her husband Frank in 1984, grandson Kevin Scufsa in 2010 and great grandson Zachary Scufsa in 2011.
At her request a celebration of her life, coffee and-, will be held at her home in Winton, 310 North West Street, Thurs., September 24 from noon until two o’clock for friends and family.
