Michael Weinzierl, 74, of Ely, dies

Michael Weinzierl, 74, of Ely, passed away on Monday, September 14, 2015 at Fall Lake in Winton. Mike was born in Soudan, MN on September 20, 1940 to Michael and Stephanie Weinzierl.
Mike was a man of many interests. As a pilot he was current with multi-engine, instrument and float plane certifications. He walked six miles a day and pulled his boat across the portages to Basswood hundreds of times.
An accomplished musician, Mike was one of the original Bopcats and played banjo with the Barich Brothers. He was an avid fisherman, even tying his own flies for trout fishing. Mike was famous for his fish fries.
He was a lifelong friend and co-owner of Mike Motors in Ely with his brother Jim. Mike was just 13 when he started working at the business his father started in 1951. Mike worked there for 45 years, retiring when he and Jim sold Mike Motors in 1999.
Mike was the greatest of grandpas to his five grandchildren. He taught all of them how to ride motorcycles, drive a stick shift and shoot guns.
He is survived by his wife Dianne, son Steve (Tanya) Weinzierl of New Richmond, WI and their children, Hanna and Zachary; son David (Kristine) Weinzierl of Andover, MN and their children, Conrad, Claire and Carter; sisters: Alberta (Tim) Forbes, Jeanette Prijatel; brother Jim (Debbie) Weinzierl; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, September 19, 2015 at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Ely at 11:00 A.M. with visitation taking place one hour prior to the service at the church. There will be a visitation on Friday, September 18, 2015 at Kerntz Funeral Home at 5:30 p.m.
