ELY KUBB Tournament set for February 6 in Whiteside Park

by David Wigdahl

The 2nd Annual Ely Winter Festival KUBB Tournament will be held next Saturday February 6 at 10 a.m. in Whiteside Park, north of the Bandshell.
The game of KUBB (rhymes with “tube”) is an ancient Nordic game that is said to have its origins with the Vikings. It has been called Swedish lawn bowling or Viking Chess. Starting roughly 25 years ago, the game exploded throughout the Nordic countries.
Over the past 10 years, KUBB has had significant growth, and the Midwest is currently home to the majority of recreational and competitive KUBB activity in the U.S.
The Ely Winter Festival Tournament re-introduces this great Summer lawn game to Winter enthusiasts here in our area. Ely will have the northernmost (and likely the coldest) KUBB Tournament in the US.
Eight teams have registered to compete (Registration continues through February 5 at www.elykubb.com so please sign up now!):
Ely TimberKubbs (Returning Champions from the-2015 Tournament)
Ely Loons
Northern Lights KubbHouse
Espland’s Resort - (2015 – 2nd Place Team)
Espland’s Resort Deuce (2015 – 3rd Place Team)
King’s Templar
Vermilion Kubb-unity College
Cooking with Kubbs
As the names suggest, we have teams from the College, the High School, the Middle School, two local restaurants, and various other clubs and families - truly a community event! Come out to cheer on your favorite team or learn to play yourself- we will have practice fields (Pitches) and KUBB sets available all day long.
The Tournament KUBB Sets are all handcrafted by local artisan Dallas Geiger, and handpainted by the members of Northern Lights Clubhouse. Check out the KUBB King Snow Sculpture by local carver Bill Defenbaugh near the Bandshell as well.
KUBB is a game for all and the Ely Tournament, sponsored by Insula Restaurant, is geared for all abilities. From first-time players to past champions, all skill levels and experience are welcome. Participants will range between eight years old and into the 80s. The top three teams will receive trophies and prizes and all will enjoy a great day of fresh air and exercise!
