Echo’s Ice Out Contest begins now for 2016

by Anne Swenson

Ely has had a yoyo winter. Temperatures have ranged from as low as 40 below earlier to 49 above just last Sunday. But spring is bound to come despite snow slithering across roadways driven by unseen winds.

The Ely Echo’s Ice Out Contest has seen results ranging from March 27, 2012 - to as late as May 22, 1950. Over the years since 1940, April dates have more frequently won.
So what’s the contest? Shagawa Lake Ice Out is officially recognized when a boat could make it across to the north shore of Shagawa from Grand Ely Lodge, even though chunks of ice may still be floating.
Competition is always fierce as family members and friends vie for the day, hour and the minute that the ice is finally gone as determined by the venerable judges at Grand Ely Lodge.
What is at stake? Why, $100 in guest bucks from Grand Ely Lodge for first place, $50 in Ely Echo Bucks for second place and $25GEL Bucks to third place. Only one entry per person. All entries must be received by March 30 unless ice is out by then. In case of a tie the earliest entry received gets the prize.
Each entry MUST have a complete name, address and phone number as well as the date and time of day for the guess. Incomplete entries are thrown out. Employees of Grand Ely Lodge and the Ely Echo are not eligible to win the prize.
Only one entry per person, no more than three entries per household application.
