New weekend for Trezona Run

Annual event set for Labor Day Saturday, instead of Harvest Moon

An annual race around the Trezona Trail is taking place one week earlier than usual this year.
The Trezona Trail Run/Walk, a fundraiser for Ely’s high school track teams, has been moved to Labor Day weekend and will be held Saturday, Sept. 3.
The four-mile race as well as the walk held in conjunction will begin and end outside the Miners’ Dry House at the Pioneer Mine complex.
For years, the event has been held on Harvest Moon Festival weekend with the start and finish just off of the Trezona Trail parking lot.
The festivities moved to the Pioneer Mine site last year and organizers opted to move dates this year.,
“This is a new weekend,” said Julie Hignell, race director. “Last year we started doing it at the Dry House and we had heard about Labor Day festivities in the past, and we started talking about moving it to that weekend, and attracting some cabin families who like to do the Four on the Fourth.”
The name of the race changed to avoid any confusion with Harvest Moon weekend, and plans are moving forward for the Sept. 3 event, which starts at 9 a.m.
“We like doing it at the Miners Dry,” said Higness. “It has electricity and we can have music.”
Also new this year the race will go in an opposite direction around the trail than it has in the past.
Registration is $25 for adults, $20 for students, and $15 for children under 12, and participants receive a race T-shirt.
Those who registered in advance may pick up their T-shirts on race day while those who sign up the day of the event must pick theirs up at a later date at Ely’s Hand Done T-Shirts.
Same day registration is set for 8 a.m. to 8:50 a.m., with the four-mile race starting at 9 and the walk to begin 10 minutes later.
A one-mile kids race will begin at mile marker three with the sound of the starting gun.
Prizes will be awarded to the top male and female finishers, and all children entered in the kids race will receive a prize.
An awards ceremony will be held at the conclusion of the event.
The race is one of several fundraisers put on by the Ely Track Club, which provides funding for both the high school boys and girls track teams. Those programs were eliminated by the school district in a 2006 budget cut and are now privately funded.
