Edward “Ed” R. Mantel, 90, of Tecumseh, MI dies

Edward “Ed” R. Mantel, 90, of Tecumseh, MI passed away on December 22, 2016, the last of his original family.
He was born on May 31, 1926 in Ely MN, the son of the late Joseph and Mary Mantel, who migrated to the USA from Slovenia.
Ed attended Ely Schools, and worked in his father’s store at times, then he volunteered for the US Forest Service at the age of 16. After high school, he joined the US Naval Air Force in 1944 and honorably discharged in 1946. Ed graduated with honors from the U of MN, in Metallurgical Engineering. He retired from GM Research Lab in Detroit after 38 years. After retirement, he built a house in Attica, MI where he enjoyed golfing and fishing. Ed was a member of the American Legion in Lapeer, MI. In 1993 he moved to Tecumseh and then married Joan Hart. In his last years, he loved to go to the casinos where he enjoyed gambling and being with people.
Ed is survived by his children, Gerald Mantel from Pittsburgh, PA, Sharon Martin of Melbourne, FL and Ronald (Helena) Mantel of Bruce Twp., MI; Joan’s daughters, Teresa Henning, Luana Bailey and Sheryl Richard; his former wife and the mother of his children, Nora Finley. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Joan, his daughter, Christine Walmsley, his step-daughter, Sheila Zimmerman and all his siblings.
