Katherine Patricia Ann Carlson, 84, of Ely, dies

Katherine Patricia Ann Carlson, 84, of Ely, passed away on Sunday, October 1, 2017 at Boundary Waters Care Center in Ely, surrounded by her family.
She was born on December 4, 1932 in Ely to Paul and Katherine Preblich and married the love of her life, Roy Clarence Carlson on August 30, 1952.
Pat was one-of-a-kind. There was never a dull moment when she was around. She created endless belly laughing with her terrific sense of humor. She was loving, generous, and brutally honest; had a warm embrace, a sassy attitude, a big smile, and made funny faces. Pat was very stubborn, but that stubbornness taught us to fight for what we believe in.
Family was the most important thing to her.
She cooked our meals, ironed our clothes, chauffeured us, gave us money, took care of us when we were sick and comforted us when we needed it. She taught us to wear our PJs while taking a “cruise through town”, to rearrange and clean our houses often, and to love the holidays (especially Christmas and July 4th with the homemade floats in the Ely and Tower parades).
Pat made amazing food and desserts and always made sure everyone had more than enough to eat. We will always remember her bright red or pink lipstick, Olay moisturizer, Dippity Doo hair gel, hair rollers and perms, and that she loved her sweets, especially jellybeans, gumdrops, and Dots.
She enjoyed selling pull tabs at Dee’s Bar for many years. It kept her “in the loop.” Pat also served on the AEOA Board of Directors, was an election judge and delivered Meals on Wheels. Most people in Ely knew and loved Grandma Pat. She was a shining beacon in all our lives and she will be greatly missed.
Pat is survived by her husband Roy of 65 years, four children – Robert (Sandra Nyman), LeRoy (Sheila Moravitz), Thomas, DeAnn (Dave Smrekar); six grandchildren: Shannon (Dennis) Wallisch, Chad Carlson (Meghan Moravitz), Shalee (Bryan) Hansen, Garrett Carlson (Melissa Portinen), Marissa Carlson, and Brianna Carlson; 13 great-grandchildren: Skyler, Grayson, Cameron, Wyatt, Brynn, Preston, Peyton, Mila, Reagan, Kayla, Austin, Aiden, and Easton. She is also survived by her five sisters: Mildred Mock, Lorraine Phelps, Margie Nelson, Florie (Donald) Maroney and Rosie (Gale) Maroney; and many other relatives.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Katherine and Paul Preblich, a brother Paul “Sonny” Preblich; two sisters: Mary Jane Larkin and Helen Francis Preblich; and several nieces and nephews.
Mass of Christian burial will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, October 10, 2017 at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Ely with Rev. Fr. William Skarich as celebrant. Visitation will be for one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be in the Ely Cemetery. Arrangements are with the Landmark Funeral Home in Virginia.
