Hazel Miller, 91, of Babbitt, dies

Hazel (Johnson) Miller of Babbitt, died Saturday, February 3, 2018, at her home at Carefree Living in Babbitt. She died peacefully, surrounded by family.
Hazel was born on May 8, 1926, in Jackson, Minnesota, the daughter of Arthur and Susan (Wade) Johnson. She was the third of 10 children born to Art and Susan. She married Roy Miller of Lakefield, Minnesota on January 31, 1942, in Maryville, Missouri. Roy was in the service so, after son Russ was born, Hazel went to Louisiana where Roy was stationed. When Roy shipped out to England, Hazel and Russ returned to Jackson. After Roy got out of the service, the family resided in Jackson until they moved to Deer Park, Wisconsin in 1952, where they owned and operated a café. Eventually she and Roy settled in Babbitt where they raised their six children.
When Hazel wasn’t busy with her children she was knitting, crocheting, or quilting. Children and grandchildren have been lucky recipients of many of these projects. She also baked and decorated deliciously beautiful cakes for many occasions. In addition, for as long as she was able, she loved to camp and fish. She was an active member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the VFW as well as a faithful member of her church for which she sewed numerous mission quilts. She worked for many years at Ely Bloomenson Hospital and was active with the Babbitt Senior Center. She was a member of Rebekah, a fraternal and service order connected to the Independent Order of Odd Fellows. Hazel and Roy were married 63 years when Roy died in 2005.
Hazel is survived by sisters Vergene Arndt and Mary Helen; her six children, Russell (Kathy) Miller of Vadnais Heights, MN, Doug (Carol) Miller of Vancouver, WA, Sharon (Jim) Boucher of Burnsville, MN, Diane (David) Serena of Babbitt, MN, Darlene (Ken) Simonson of Eveleth, MN, and Tom Miller of Maple Grove, MN; 22 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; 3 great-great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews.
