Pee Wees make it to regionals

The Ely Blue Line hosted the Pee Wee B Districts tournament this year. The home team took third place and has advanced to the Region Tournament held in Sauk Rapids, MN on March 2-4. A third-place tournament finish, coming in dramatic fashion on home ice, will extend Ely’s Pee Wee hockey season.
The future Timberwolves shook off an opening-round defeat and came back to finish third in the district Pee Wee B playoffs held last weekend at the Ely Arena.
The weekend included Sunday’s 3-2 overtime thriller over Greenway that gave Ely third place as well as a berth in the regionals, slated for Mar. 2-4 at Sauk Rapids.
Luke Rice scored in overtime as the Wolves won a battle in front of the net and preaviled in the extra session. Logan Loe assisted on the game-winner.
Ely trailed 2-1 late in the contest and forced overtime with about a minute to go.
Defenseman Jackson Hegman got the puck ahead to Drew Marolt, who punched in the equalizer.
Wesley Sandy scored Ely’s first goal, which came on a shorthanded breakaway in the opening period.
Goaltender Ben Cavalier recorded the shutout Saturday as Ely stayed alive in the tournament with a 5-0 win over International Falls.
Goals by Sam Leeson, Tommy Homer and Deegan Richards gave Ely a 3-0 lead after the opening frame.
Kole Macho added a second-period goal while Richards lit the lamp for the second time in the final period.
Luke Rice, Sandy, Ty Walker, Hegman and Kaedin Zupancich all had assists in the game for the Wolves.
The tournament got off to a disappointing start for the host team Feb. 16, when it fell 3-1 to Greenway.
Brecken Sandberg had Ely’s only goal, with an assist from Rice.
