A no-hitter for Ely’s Longwell

by Tom Coombe -

Bryce Longwell mowed down North Woods as Ely’s Junior Legion baseball team returned from a weeklong layoff with an easy victory.
The sophomore righthander fired a no-hitter as Ely rolled to a 10-0, five-inning decision Tuesday night at Veterans Memorial Field.
Longwell dominated on the hill en route to the shutout and his first no-hitter. He notched five strikeouts in a game shortened to five innings because of the mercy rule.
Ely scored five first-inning runs against an overmatched and undermanned North Woods team.
The visitors came to the ballpark with only eight players and were no match for an Ely team that improved to 6-1 for the summer.
Longwell got plenty of offensive support from his teammates.
Dalton Schreffler roped three hits including a double, and he scored twice for the winners.
Both Mitch Peterson and Harry Simons had two-run singles, while Ryan Quick and Jacob Towley had run-scoring hits.
Joey Pierce also picked up two hits for Post 248.
Ely has a pair of Eighth District matchups ahead, both on the road.
Monday night Ely visits Marble and will take on Taconite, while a trip to Grand Marais follows on Friday, July 6.
