Veronica “Bonnie” Farkas, age 79, dies

Veronica (Bonnie) Farkas (Zgonc), 79, a long-time resident of Winton and Ely, Minnesota passed away at her residence surrounded by her family after a courageous battle with cancer on September 27, 2018. Bonnie was a much loved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. She was born in Ely, Minnesota on July 29, 1939, to Matt (Bell) and Josephine Zgonc. She graduated from Ely Memorial High School in 1957 and then attended business school in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Bonnie was married to John E. Farkas on January 17, 1959 and they resided in Winton until his death in 1982.
John and Bonnie were in partnership as owners and operators of Border Lakes Outfitters from the mid 1970s to the mid 1980s. Bonnie worked and managed the former Winton Liquor Store for many years until her retirement in 1999. Bonnie loved spending time with her family and friends, particularly her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her hobbies included reading, playing cards, board games - specifically a good game of Scrabble, spending time at the lake, and baking - especially cookies, bars and pies. Bonnie was always willing to open her home and heart to anyone she met and she always saw the good in others. Despite various hardships she maintained a positive outlook throughout her life.
Survivors include her children, Jo Ann (Craig) Whitehill, Robert (Noreen) Farkas, Sue Navarro, Scott (Sheila) Farkas, Darryl (Kelly) Farkas, and Duane (Nichole) Farkas. Her 19 grandchildren include Whitney (Landon) Parker; Kelsey, Caitlin, Jack, and Aidan Farkas; Kevin Moses, Ashley (Chris Cisneros) Navarro, Katie (Steve) Jones; Cara (Joel) Clevenger, Loren (Austin) Lampson, Isabelle Farkas; Luke O’Neil, Logan and Landon Tuomala, Mackenzie and Annika Farkas; and Gretchen, Matt, and Will Farkas. She also has three great-grandchildren, Ryu Moses, Bryant Cisneros, and James Clevenger. She is also survived by her sisters Virginia (John) Trucano and Nancy (Rocky) Gaither, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband John, her parents Matt and Josephine, her sister Mary Ann (Herman) Noblesse and her long-time companion Truman Hinden.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, October 6, 2018 at 11:00 A.M. at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Ely with visitation taking place one hour prior to the service at the church. Family arrangements have been entrusted to Kerntz Funeral Home of Ely.
