Calendar of weekend holiday events offers family fun

There is a wave of excitement moving throughout the community. Children are excited as the snow begins to accumulate and lakes freeze. Sledding, skiing and hockey are on their way. Adults are making plans for holiday gatherings with family and friends. All are anticipating the fun and celebration of the season.

Ely has long standing traditions highlighting our unique and beautiful corner of the north woods. We invite you to come and celebrate the start of winter with these great events:

Thanks giving Night Shopping – Thursday, November 22 Gather with family, friends and neighbors to enjoy the warmth and tradition and get a jump on holiday shopping. Local businesses open their doors from 6-9 pm. Many businesses are offering merchandise specials, live music, treats and all will have plenty of holiday cheer. The Ely Chamber of Commerce is creating a map of participating businesses that will be available starting on Friday, November 16 at either the Chamber office or online at www.ely .org on the event calendar.

Festival of Trees – Thursday, November 22 at the Grand Ely Lodge The lighting event is at 5 pm. Support Northwoods Partners with the purchase of a beautifully decorated, tree, wreath, item from their holiday boutique or a memorial ornament to honor or remember a loved one. There will also be a raffle for a beautiful handmade queen sized quilt. Trees and wreaths on display from November 22 through December 2.

Holiday Fantasy – Friday, November 23 from noon to 4 pm and Saturday, November 24 from 10 am to 2 pm. Enjoy a wide variety of arts, crafts and food. Kids can visit with Santa and enjoy sleigh rides too. Event located at the Miner’s Dry. Hosted by Stone Soup Events.

Small Town Christmas – Saturday, November 24 Spend the day visiting our local businesses. Stores are brimming with giftware, outdoor gear, apparel, tools, toys and plenty of Ely Made items. With the great variety and unique products, it is easy to find something for everyone on your holiday shopping list. A list of participating businesses will be available at the Ely Chamber of Commerce office or online at www.ely.org on the event calendar starting on Friday, November 16.

Ely’s End of the Road Christmas Parade – Saturday, November 24 Our annual parade starts at 5 pm and winds along Sheridan Street returning to Whiteside Park. Hot cider, cocoa and cookies await parade goers in the Whiteside Park Pavilion following the parade. Kids will have the opportunity to greet Santa in the pavilion after he finishes his ride on the Ely Fire Truck. There will be a place to sit and visit with Santa and Dafne Caruso from the Art Corner will have a fun craft activity for kids from 5:30-6:30 pm. Join Mayor Novak as he lights up the official City of Ely Christmas tree.

Not one to stand on the sidelines and watch the parade go by? The Ely Chamber of Commerce will be offering prizes for best float, walking group, best holiday costume and best decked out vehicle. Mrs. Claus Party – Saturday, December 8 from 1-3 pm at Amici’s Join Mrs. Claus as she invites area children to her annual Christmas party. Santa will be there too. Plenty of holiday craft projects, music, dance and treats. Each child receives their own gift bag and ornament.
