Winter Frolic Week coming up at EHS

by Tom Coombe -

After three days off, students at Ely Memorial High School this week have a major celebration.
They’re not, however, marking a return to the classroom after a weather-induced break. Instead, it’s time for Winter Frolic Week.
The monotony of the middle of the school year will be broken up with an array of events and old-fashioned fun are in the works as students celebrate the season.
The celebration actually started at the end of the school day Friday, when a “Preview to Winter Frolic” pep rally was held.
The events ramp up this weekend with hallway decorating, setting the stage for dress-up days, home sports events, pep fests as well as a dance.
Royalty candidates were set to be named at the preview event and a king and queen will be crowned during a pep rally slated for 10 a.m. Tuesday.
Another pep rally is in the works on Friday at 2:30 p.m.
Student dress-up days take place all week with the following themes: Mixed Up (Monday), Twin (Tuesday), Way Back (Wednesday), Tourist (Thursday) and Extreme Red and White (Friday).
A performance by the high school dance team, including the popular annual Boy/Girl dance, is part of Tuesday’s pep rally while a spaghetti dinner, with proceeds benefiting the seniors taking the class trip to Washington, D.C., is set from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday.
Numerous home sports events take place during the week, with girls basketball Monday, a boys and girls basketball doubleheader and a hockey game Tuesday, both boys basketball and hockey Friday, and girls basketball the afternoon of Saturday, Feb. 9.
The week will be capped off that Saturday by the semi-formal Winter Frolic Dance, to be held from 8 to 11 p.m., in the small gymnasium.
Winter Frolic week events are coordinated by the high school student council.
