Ely boys kings of the Kerzie

Olson, Schwinghamer and Omerza take firsts at annual meet

by Tom Coombe -

Less than ideal conditions haven’t hindered Ely’s high school boys track team, at least when it comes to the standings.
The Timberwolves racked up another impressive win at the Apr. 26 Kerzie Invitaional, piling up 128.5 points to easily win the 12-team event.
Distance men Luke Olson and James Schwinghamer, both juniors, scored easy victories while classmate Eric Omerza was first in the triple jump.
Olson and Schwighamer also teamed up with Dylan Fenske and Emmett Faltesek to win the four-by-800 relay.
Yet the Wolves’ most solid outing of the afternoon may have come from senior Jasiah Wigdahl, who recorded thirds in two throwing events.
“The biggest performances of the day go to Jasiah Wigdahl, who had two very good throws--his 135 in the discus is his second best ever, and Friday’s conditions were trying,” said Ely Head Coach Will Helms.
Olson, an all-stater in cross country, continues to make the most of his debut season in track and won the 800 in 2:05.31.
Schwinghamer had little trouble in the 3,200, winning that event (10:16) with 14 seconds to spare.
In the triple jump, Omerza inched closer to the 40-foot mark and won in 39-2.
Another notable outing came from senior Isaac Gawboy, who was part of a stacked field in the 100 dash and took second in 11.94 seconds. He was also fifth in the 200.
The Wolves had a second-place four-by-400 relay group, with Nate Nettifee joining Raif Olson, Luke Olson and Faltesek on the silver medal-winning squad.
Nettifee was fourth in the 400, while Raif Olson picked up a third in the 110 hurdles and was fourth in the 300.
“We scored in nearly every event, but still have a lot of work to do in figuring out relays and field events,” said Helms. “Right now, we really need the weather to turn in our favor.”
The Wolves were at Hibbing’s Doc Savage Meet Friday and are getting set for May 7 (Virginia) and May 10 (Belluzzo Invitational) events. The subsection meet is scheduled for May 22.
