Another award for Dick Zahn of Ely, this time for his 50 year membership of the Fleet Reserve Association.
He also belongs to the VFW, DAV, Am Vets and Tin Can Sailors.
“I’m a life member of all of them,” said Zahn.
The 50 years membership moment arrived for the FRA and was celebrated with dinner at Veterans on the Lake.
Zahn is a retired Navy Chief and was a long time director of the board at Veterans on the Lake.
The secretary of this branch of FRA and Chief of the Navy Chiefs, Gene Jernigan, organized the award ceremony and an appreciation dinner for the Navy Chiefs, the men who come up and stay at the Veterans on the Lake and do what ever needs to be done.
These men have a variety of skills they offer for the upkeep out at Veterans on the Lake and have been coming up for around 12 to 14 years along with the Marines.
The FRA, a Federally charted organization, includes the Navy, Marines, and Coast Guard are the Sea Services, the three groups that serve on ships. All the veterans at the appreciation dinner are members of the FRA.
This year everyone is retired from the Navy, 12 guys with over 300 years of service between them.
In the past they have had as many as 22 volunteers. They come up and just work. Projects this year include remodeling of cabins 10 and 4 with new floors, knotted pine indoor siding and new windows.
They are also working at redoing electric and installing new heaters in the pump house to keep the wells from freezing. This group stays for a week each year.
Neil Olson, chairman of the board of directors of Veterans on the Lake and his wife Terri Olson also on the board, were cooking for the event along with Neil Weisinger, general manager.
