Changes at Ely Community Health Center include new dental clinic starting in September, home health care

Changes and new offerings are being made at the Ely Community Health Center.
Executive director Jon Erickson announced the changes on Wednesday.
“We have moved the date of the clinic to change from Monday evenings at 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. to Thursday evenings for the same times.
“We will be opening a new dental clinic focusing on fluoride varnish treatment in September. The dental clinic will be open from 5:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. on the second and fourth Mondays of each month,” said Erickson.
He said the dental clinic will focus initially on fluoride varnish treatment especially for the elderly, because medications can damage the dental, and children as well as those who can not afford dental care because of any number of finance reasons.
“The fluoride varnish treatment is an economical way to treat sensitivity in both adults and children and provides an additional tool that protects the teeth from cavities and sensitivity.
“We will also be able to make dental referrals to Scenic Rivers Health Services as well as the potential of including Silver Diamine Fluoride to ‘arrest’ active dental decay when the patient has limited access to a dentist.
“As with all of our services the treatment is free of charge. The fluoride varnish treatment takes only two to four minutes so it does not require a significant investment of time and only needs to be done twice to four times a year depending on the age of the person and the level of need,” said Erickson.
Peg Simonson of Scott Anderson’s dental practice will be the primary service provider.
“Although we will have others who can help cover should we experience any significant demand for the procedures,” said Erickson.
The location is the same as the free medical clinic which is 111 S. 4th Ave, E. in the old AFU building.
“We are also expanding into a couple of other areas to address the loss of services provided to the community with the closure of the Ely hospital home health services group.”
More information on those added services will be coming out in the next week or so.
