Doris J. Bothun, 88, of Babbitt

Doris M. Bothun, 88, passed away peacefully on November 23, 2019, at Boundary Waters Care Center in Ely.
Doris was born, July 5, 1931, in Rushford, MN, to Elmer and Marilla (Skrukrud) Jacobson. She lived her early life in Rushford and Lanesboro. Her family eventually settled in Chatfield where she graduated from high school in 1950. She married Elroy Bothun on June 13, 1952, and lived there until moving to Babbitt, MN, in 1956.
Doris enjoyed many years of bowling (attaining a lot of trophies for her high bowling scores). While raising her four children, she was a stay-at-home-mom who loved to bake, can her home-grown vegetables and sewing as a way to provide for her family. She and Elroy spent many years involved in church, dance club, snowmobiling with family and friends, camping, spending weekends on their houseboat and playing cribbage with the neighbors. She was a whiz at crossword puzzles which kept her mind so sharp toward the end. As the kids grew up, she drove school bus and waitressed at the Babbitt Cafe.
In 1984, she and Elroy moved back to Chatfield for a few years when the mining companies shut down. She got a job working at the local grocery store to help with finances. And, she never hesitated to find something to do or to pitch in somewhere. In 1993 Elroy suffered a stroke, so they returned to Babbitt to be closer to the area they truly called home. She was able to reconnect with her bowling friends and joined the Babbitt Lions Club as a way to give back to her community. And most of all, she loved time with her family, grandchildren and all of the extended family that spent time visiting with her. She left us with an amazing legacy of an amazing woman.
She is survived by her daughters Lana (George) Hietala, Ely, MN, Lori (Randy) Skoglund, Wyoming, MN, and her son Norm (Rosanna Markel) Colorado Springs, CO, nine grandchildren, Jessica, Jolene, Jared, Janeen, Eric, Anders, John, Kirsten and Daniel as well as 11 great-grandchildren Victoria, Scott, Keith, Alexandrea, Madisyn, Tyler, Megan, Haylee, Callie, Elina and Willah.
She was preceded in death by her parents, brother and sister, son, David (Booty) in 2001, her husband Elroy (2005) and daughter-in-law, Mary (2013).
Keeping with her wishes, a small graveside service will be planned for the spring of 2020.
Family arrangements have been entrusted to Kerntz Funeral Home of Ely.
