ARLENE JACOBSEN of Richfield, Minnesota

ARLENE JACOBSEN of Richfield, Minnesota passed away December 24 at her residence, The Pines Senior and Assisted Living Facility. She was 98 years old.

She was born April 23, 1921 in Hewitt, MN to Lloyd and Ella (Sycks) Bower. Shortly thereafter the family moved to Hibbing, MN where her parents farmed and her father worked as a railroad engineer in the Hull Rust mine.

After graduating from Hibbing High School in 1939, Arlene resided in Duluth where she earned her teaching degree at Duluth State Teachers College (now folded into University of Minnesota Duluth). Her first, and last, teaching job took her to Hovland, MN where she taught in a one room school. This teaching job did not last long as in 1942 she met and married Robert Jacobsen, her husband of 56 years. Life then took the couple to Tucson, AZ for a short time, then to Ely. While in Ely Arlene was quite busy raising four boys as well as working at the JC Penney store, first on the sales floor, then in the office. Winters were spent at a second home in Mesa, AZ from 1985 to 2016.

She will be remembered for her friendliness, selflessness, adventurousness and her love of family. She made friends wherever she went. As a selfless person she was always looking out for others and accommodating others. At age 88 she snorkeled for the first time off a catamaran in the Caribbean. At age 90 she bought a 7 passenger vehicle so there would be plenty of room when people came to visit, especially family. -40 degrees Ely snowmobiling also comes to mind.

Many family members remember her for the dishes she prepared for them when they came to visit. While not Slovenian, she made a darn good walnut potica. Other dishes remembered by family include blueberry pie, sugar cookies, homemade bread and her homemade oatmeal.

Arlene was preceded in death by her husband, Robert (Jake).

She is survived by her four sons: Lawrence (Lavonne) of Larimore, ND, Dennis of Aurora, MN, Craig (Cabrini) of Loveland, OH and Chester (Barbara) of Richfield, MN. Survivors also include granddaughter Kimberly Devereaux (Dan) of Spokane, WA, granddaughter Sue Ann Iverson (John) of Janesville, WI, grandson Adam Jacobsen (Melissa) of Orting, WA, grandson Robert Jacobsen (Janet) of Tioga, ND; step-grandson Chad Fitzgerald of Warrenton, MO, step-granddaughter Amanda (Jeremy) of Prior Lake, MN, step-grandson Ryan Fitzgerald of Warrenton, MO and step-granddaughter Erin Fitzgerald of Edina, MN, five great grandchildren and seven step-great grandchildren.

A summer interment in Ft. Snelling, MN is planned. Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.
