SPRING CLEAN UP AT THE ELY CEMETERY

SPRING CLEAN UP AT THE ELY CEMETERY

Despite the late arrival of spring and the recent cool weather we are nonetheless still getting closer to Memorial Day. It will not be the usual holiday this year but the work of cleaning up graves at the cemetery is here. Decorations such as old wreaths and faded artificial arrangements should be picked up and removed. Some have blown across onto the access roads making things look unsightly.
Fill, both gravel and topsoil, is available for the taking. It can be found in several places on the northeast end of the cemetery. The City is again hoping to engage the services of the Northern Bedrock group this summer to assist in cutting brush, trimming bushes, leveling headstones, and filling in sunken graves. This is especially critical since the city budget does not allow for this. Many of these graves belong to families that have either died out or long ago have moved away from the area.
The Hugh and Eila Korpi Ely Cemetery Trust has paid for the construction of the new information kiosk. Soon there will be a map showing all lot numbers. A separate listing of all known burials will also be posted under protective glass. The third panel in the kiosk will list the cemetery rules for burials, markers, headstones, etc. This has been a long awaited addition and we are thankful to the Korpi’s for this. Other projects for the betterment of the cemetery are also being considered by this
Trust.
Our cemetery crew is a very hard-working group. Particularly in the first months of the summer the mowers are out most every day. Mowing around the many markers and other decorations can be quite challenging as only some of this work can be done with riding mowers. Wires from artificial arrangements are particularly hazardous to the equipment. Please do your part with the decorations and floral arrangements you have put on the graves of your loved ones.
Contributions are still being taken for the cemetery general fund. These help with overall maintenance and upkeep. Checks may be sent to the city clerk’s office at Ely City Hall, 209 East Chapman Street, Ely MN 55731. If anyone is interested in serving on the Cemetery Committee, there still is an open position, please contact City Hall at 218-226-5474.
