Nemanich, Tulla coach HS teams to state tourney

A couple of coaches with Ely connections were involved in last week’s state high school baseball tournament.
Jerome Nemanich, a 1988 Ely graduate, is head coach for Sartell, which finished fourth in Class AAA, while 1985 Ely graduate Greg Tulla was an assistant at Class AAA runner-up Grand Rapids.
Both Nemanich and Tulla are former players and coaches in Ely’s baseball program.
Nemanich, who has spent the last 23 years as head coach at Sartell, guided the Sabers to the Section 8AA title, a 22-5 overall record and an opening round win over Albert Lea June 15 at Jordan.
The former Ely Timberwolf also coached Sartell to state in high school baseball in both 2004 and 2005 and in American Legion baseball in 1998.
Tulla has been a longtime coach in the Grand Rapids program, coaching his VFW team to a state championship in 2014.
Grand Rapids (19-8) won the Section 7AAA title, beat Marshall and St. Thomas Academy in the state tournament but lost to Mahtomedi in a June 18 state championship game at Target Field.
