Joseph Haasl, 101

Joseph Haasl, of Babbitt, MN, passed away peacefully on December 15th, 2021, just six days shy of his 102nd birthday. In his later years, the first thing that Joe would want you to know about him was that he was a World War II veteran who fought in the European theater at the end of that war. Of course, his family would tell you that there was much more to him.

Katherine Nyman

Katherine Nyman

Passed away peacefully on December 9, 2021 at the age of 93.

She was born in Ely, Minnesota on August 14, 1928 to Arvid and Josephine Larson. Katherine met her match, her prince and her best friend, Arthur Nyman, when he returned to Ely after serving in WWII. They married in Ely, then moved to Minneapolis where they graduated from the University of Minnesota with degrees in education, both enjoying long and rewarding years in the North St. Paul-Maplewood School District 622.

Katherine is survived by their two daughters, Cynthia Coon (Gary) and Marsha Larson (Eric); five grandchildren, Ryan (David), Evan (Julia), Jenna (Kouri), Alec (Lindsey), and Aron, and two great granddaughters. They miss her already. Katherine’s trademarks were her wit and her sense of humor. She was a bright light with endless energy for her family, her friends and her students.

Lorraine J. Campbell

Lorraine J. Campbell (nee Jackson), age 98 of Macedonia, formerly of Ely, MN, passed away Wednesday, December 8, 2021. Lorraine was the beloved wife of the late Joseph M. Campbell; loving mother of Karen Greenlee, Nancy (Charles) Zeisser and Billie Campbell; dear grandmother of Paul Campbell, Laura (John) Lathem, Jennifer (Christopher, deceased) Allgaier, Jonathan (Sarah) Zeisser and Amy; great grandmother of 8; beloved daughter of the late Einar and Emily (nee Fulford) Jackson; loving sister of the late Virginia Ahlin. A woman of enduring faith, Lorraine will be remembered for her gentle spirit, her generous nature, and her great kindness. The funeral service was held December 13, 2021 at the United Methodist Church of Macedonia, 1280 E. Aurora Rd., Macedonia, OH. She was laid to rest at Northlawn Memorial Gardens. Lolita M. Schnitzius

Lolita M. Schnitzius, 83, of Ely, passed away on Sunday, December 5, 2021 at Carefree Assisted Living in Ely.
Lolita was born on June 9, 1938 in Evanston, Illinois on June 6,1938 to John and Betty Schnitzius. She grew up in Chicago, graduated from Alvernia High School and received a BA in art and English from Marycrest College in Davenport, Iowa. Leet, as her family affectionally called her, worked in advertising in Chicago for 12 before coming to Ely in 1972.

Mae Kathryn (Tootsie) (LaTourelle) Loe

Mae Kathryn (Tootsie) (LaTourelle) Loe, beloved daughter, sister, wife, aunt, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and dear friend passed away on December 8, 2021 surrounded by family and loved ones at Ely Bloomeson Community Hospital.
Tootsie was born on August 31, 1939 in Minnesota Lake, MN to Hollis and Mae LaTourelle. The LaTourelles moved to a cabin north of Ely in 1940. Soon after her family moved to Winton, MN, where Tootsie grew up.
She graduated from Ely Memorial High School in 1957. She went on to Airline school and worked in Chicago and Minneapolis for Capital/Pan Am before marrying Rod Loe in 1959. Tootsie lived in Ely the rest of her life where she and Rod raised Pam, Pat and Mike.

Maria Zoe Planton

Maria Zoe Planton known to everyone as, Zoe, age 81 of Soudan, Minnesota, died peacefully in her home surrounded by family on November 30, 2021.
She was born on July 26, 1940 to Joseph Zupancich Sr. and Mary (Gasperlin) Zupancich in Ely, Minnesota. Zoe graduated from Ely High School in 1958 and following graduation attended St. Catherine’s University, in St. Paul, Minnesota. On October 21, 1961 she married the love of her life, Frank Planton, and pursued her dream of being a mom.
Zoe’s family was her priority. Zoe’s home became known as Zoe’s Bed & Breakfast to her children with delicious home cooked meals and everything they needed when they visited. Zoe’s fondest memory to her children was to always be in the front yard waving goodbye until she could no longer see them as they departed from her home.

Marsnik, Alice Nadine Chamberlain

Marsnik, Alice Nadine Chamberlain, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, teacher, and friend, died at home November, 30, 2021. In her last weeks, she expressed that her greatest wish was to spend the end of her life surrounded by her beloved children, grandchildren, friends, and family.
Nadine was born September 5, 1931, the third of five children born to Ellard (Pike) and Alice (nee Johnson) Chamberlain in Clontarf, Minnesota. Nadine was an exceptional student who devoted her life to education. She graduated from Benson High School as co-salutatorian with her lifelong best friend, with whom she attended the College of St. Catherine in St. Paul. She was the first in her family to earn a college degree, graduating with honors and Phi Beta Kappa. She earned her Masters of Education from the University of Minnesota Duluth in 1974 and in 1985 completed all of her coursework for a PhD from the College of Liberal Arts at the University of Minnesota.

Billy J. Andrews, 65 of Palm Springs, CA passed away Monday, November 1, 2021 in Palm Springs, CA.
Bill was born on August 13, 1956 in Pekin, IL to Jimmy D. and Amelia M. (Masnari) Andrews.
Bill was preceded in death by his father, one Uncle, John Masnari and one Aunt, Shirley Frank.
He is survived by: his Mother, Amelia, two brothers; Jerry of Peoria, IL and Scott (Joni) of Tremont, IL, his Uncle Gary Andrews of Pinkneyville, IL, Uncle Ray Frank of Morton, IL, his Aunt Sharon Mutchler of Pekin and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
