Lynn “Bunny” Pohia, 54, dies

Lynn “Bunny” Pohia, 54, passed away unexpectedly Tuesday, April 21, 2015 at St. Luke’s Hospital in Duluth.
Lynn Marie Pohia was born in Ely to Daniel Frank and Geneva (Swallowson) Scufsa Sr. She was raised by her loving grandparents, Frank and Katie until moving to Mountain Iron where she graduated from high school in 1979. She happily married Wayne Pohia in 1982 and began building their life in Embarrass and then Mountain Iron, where they raised their two girls. She started her own home daycare center where she proudly raised her own children and countless others. During these 25 years, she was a mother to many and loved by all.
Besides her family, her other loves were her lake homes, gardening and fishing. On most weekends, she would be found enjoying the lake and a sauna so hot that only a select few could tolerate.

Judith (Masnari) Hobart, 75, dies

Judith (Masnari) Hobart died peacefully on Monday, April 13, 2015, at her son’s house in Mesa, AZ at the age of 75.
Judy is survived by her sister Amelia Andrews, children: John Kleemola, Mary Kleemola, Thomas Kleemola, Edward Kleemola, Lee Hobart, Art Hobart, Wanda Hobart (Dotty Pakieser), Michele Hobart (Thomas Owens), Eric Hobart (Elaine Moran), Craig Hobart (Sabrina Wright); eight grandchildren, four great grandchildren, three nieces and four nephews.
Judy is preceded in death by her parents Frank and Beatrice Masnari, brother John Masnari, and husband Robert E. Hobart.

Dennis Eugene Tedrick, 72, of Ely dies

Dennis Eugene Tedrick, 72, of Ely died Wednesday, April 15, 2015 at his home surrounded by his loved ones.
He was born March 15, 1943 in Coshocton, Ohio to Ruth and Chester Johnson. He moved to Ely in January 1960. He married Edie Richards in February of 1964. He was employed at Reserve Mining Company until its closure. He then worked at Starkman Oil Company until his retirement.
He was an active member of the Ely United Methodist Church. He had a passion for classic cars and was a charter member of the Drag-A-Vons car club in the 1960s. He was a member of the Ely Police Commission. He enjoyed snowmobiling, four-wheeling, cruising in his ’55 Chevy and trying to fix anything that was broken. Above all, he loved spending time with his four grandchildren.

Florence Petrzilka, 93, of Ely, dies

Florence Petrzilka, 93, of Ely, passed away on Wednesday, April 15, 2015 at the Boundary Waters Care Center in Ely. She was born June 8, 1921 to Oscar and Mary Hoppe.
Florence was preceded in death by her parents and husband, Joseph Petrzilka.
She is survived by her sons: Richard (Nancy) Petrzilka of Ely and Ron (Joyce) Petrzilka of St. Charles, IL; grandchildren: Julia and Richard Petrzilka; Mary, Ann and Mike Petrzilka; and great grandchildren: RJ and Ailie Petrzilka, and Jace Mather.
Family arrangements have been entrusted to Kerntz Funeral Home of Ely.

Baudouin F. De Marcken, 74, dies

Baudouin (Butch) F. de Marcken, 74, of Babbitt, died Sunday, April 12, 2015.
Born on October 21, 1940 in Louvain, Belgium as a U.S. citizen, Baudouin was the youngest of nine children of Alix de Kerchove d’Exarde and Gustave Richard Theodore de Marcken de Merken. He spent his early childhood during World War II in Belgium, and moved to the United States at the age of 12. He moved first to Brule, Wisconsin, then joined his family in 1953 at their home, Stonehouse, outside Lakeville, CT.
Baudouin earned a B.S. in Government in 1962 from Colby College, and a M.A. in Political Science in 1964 from the University of Michigan. After graduation, he joined as one of the first U.S. Peace Corps volunteers from 1964-1967 in Sarawak, Malaysia, where he worked as a teacher in the jungle towns of Saratok and Belaga, and where he met his wife Gail, a Peace Corps volunteer from Minnesota, when she traveled up-river to visit Belaga to buy food and supplies.

Clara Lee Starkman, 75, dies

Clara Lee Starkman, 75, died peacefully Friday, April 10, 2015 at White Pines Senior Living in Blaine, MN. Clara was born on September 17, 1939 to Theodore and Katherine (Rozman) Patka of Winton, MN. She was a longtime resident of Ely before moving to Virginia, MN in 1974 and then moved to Blaine in 2011.
Clara is survived by her children: Scott (Mary) Starkman of Duluth, MN, Brian (Jill) Starkman of Inver Grove Heights, MN, Stephanie Starkman of South St. Paul, MN and Stacy (Brad) Hanson of Lino Lakes, MN; grandchildren: Nichole, Michaela, Erik Starkman and Skylar Hanson; siblings: Milton Patka of Blaine, MN and Jan (Joanne) Patka of Inver Grove Heights, MN; nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

Mason Storm DeRosier, 21, of Silver Bay dies

Mason Storm DeRosier, 21, of Silver Bay died unexpectedly on Thursday, April 9, 2015.
He was born on April 12, 1993 to Richard and Lisa (Berglund) DeRosier in Two Harbors. Mason graduated from William Kelley High School in 2011 and served in the Air National Guard as a firefighter for the 148th Fighter Wing. He had recently returned from a deployment in Kuwait in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. He earned many awards and certifications to include; the Air Force Achievement Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster. He was recently promoted to the rank of Senior Airman. Mason was a certified EMT and had just recently enrolled in the Paramedic program at St. Cloud State University.
Hockey, golfing and spending time in the outdoors, especially hunting and fishing were among his favorite hobbies. More than anything, Mason loved being a fire fighter for the 148th Fighter Wing.

Richard C. Mahal, 87, of Babbitt, dies

Richard "Dick" Mahal, 87, of Babbitt passed away peacefully on April 9, 2015 at the Boundary Waters Care Center in Ely.

He was born October 5, 1928 in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin to Frank and Rosalinda (Seichter) Mahal. After graduating from Hannibal High School in 1946, Dick studied at River Falls College for a short time prior to serving with the U.S. Army in Japan from 1946 to 1948. He then worked as a welder for Haasl Brothers in Sheldon, Wisconsin, where he met and married Grace Haasl in March, 1951.
In 1956 they moved to Babbitt, Minnesota, where he worked for Reserve Mining Company as a welder and supervisor for 30 years.
