Nancy A. Bauer, 85, dies

Nancy A. Bauer, 85, died in Ely on June 17, 2015. She was born on a farm near Lyndon, IL to Elbert and Irene Lathe.
She attended Stephen’s College and the University of Minnesota where she earned her nursing RN license. She worked in public health, state hospitals, and the Robbinsdale School District as a school nurse for many years.
She and her husband “Duffy” started Camp Buckskin back in 1959 for youth with social skill difficulties. Along with being the camp nurse for many years, she provided the organization and stability that touched the lives of a great many campers and staff.
She is survived by her two sons, five grandchildren, and their spouses.

Robin Marie (Haasl) Kirkman, 56, dies

Robin Marie (Haasl) Kirkman, 56, passed away suddenly in Granite Falls, MN. She was born May 2, 1958 in Winton to Russell (Rusty) and Sheila Haasl.
She is survived by her daughter, Genevieve, Boise, ID; a grandson, Tyler Edlund, Babbitt, MN; siblings: Tony (Lynne) Haasl, Sacred Heart, MN, Keith (Carol) Haasl, Aurora, MN, Ann (Duke) Bambas, Arizona City, AZ, Matt (Crystal) Haasl, Chisholm, MN; and stepmother Margaret Haasl, Ely.
An informal celebration of life gathering will be held on Saturday, August 1 at 1:00, at the home of her grandson, Tyler, at 8350 Joseph St, Babbitt, MN.

Marelyn R. Musich, 74, dies

Marelyn R. Musich, 74, of Evansville, IN died Monday, July 13, 2015 after a graceful and noble encounter with Leukemia.
She was born to Robert J. and Catherine L. (Motherway) Crothers, January 19, 1941 in Hibbing, MN and later lived in Babbitt and graduated from Ely Memorial High School in 1959. She was the first Miss Babbitt in 1958 for Peter Mitchell Days.
She received her BS in Nursing from the College of St. Scholastica, Duluth, and her Masters from University of Evansville in 1990. She married the love of her life, Raymond B. Musich in September 1963, and they lived in St. Cloud and Winona, MN before relocating to Evansville, IN in 1982.
Prior to retiring in 2007, Marelyn had a long career in health care as an R.N. She closed her career performing marketing and admissions for several long-term care facilities.

Richard (Dick) E. Anderson, 80, dies

Richard (Dick) E. Anderson, 80, passed away unexpectedly on July 14, 2015.
Dick was born in St. Paul, Minnesota to Goldren and Engwall Anderson, and graduated from Murray High School in St. Paul, MN in 1953. He earned a BA degree from Macalester College in St. Paul and a Masters degree from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York.
Dick’s service as a Lieutenant in the Navy and Naval Reserve lead to a lifetime love of sailing.
Dick taught high school and coached at Mapleton High School in Denver from 1961 to 1963, at Lake County high school from 1963 until 1980 and at Gateway High School in Aurora, Colorado from 1986 to 1995.
Dick married Mary (nee Rautio) in 1982. They resided in the Denver area while teaching until 1995, then retired to Leadville Colorado, spending many winters in Mexico RVing and this last winter in Tucson.

Donna M. Semeja, 81, of Virginia dies

Donna M. Semeja, 81, of Virginia passed away Sunday, July 12, 2015 in Essentia Health St. Mary’s Medical Center in Duluth.
She was born on September 19, 1933 in Calumet, MN and graduated from the Eveleth High School in 1951.
Donna worked at Reserve Mining Company in Babbitt and was active in the Lutheran churches in Babbitt, Ely and Virginia. She was a member of Eastern Star and the Red Hat Society.
She enjoyed spending time at their lake homes, traveling, playing bingo and supporting Rudy’s sports teams; and most importantly spending time with family and friends.

Everett Schanlaub, 87, of Babbitt, dies

Everett Eldon Schanlaub, 87 of Babbitt passed away Monday July 6th.

Everett was born in Mt. Ayer, Indiana on December 20, 1927 to John William and Nora Ellen (Thomas) Schanlaub of Indiana.

He served in the US Army during WWII. Everett was united in marriage to Virginia Knouff on August 22, 1950. He was employed with Linde Air of East Chicago, Indiana which then transferred him to Babbitt in 1967. He later became employed at Kirsher Transport in Virginia and retired in 1989.

Everett is survived by his children Leon (Gilbert), Clarence (Denise) Arizona, Christine (Jim)Blanchard Backus, Charles (Myra) Babbitt, Laura Schanlaub (Laughlin), Dorothy Schanlaub (Virginia), grandchildren and great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 64 Years, his parents and 3 brothers.

Graveside Military Service will be held on Saturday July 18 at 9 am at Argo Cemetery, Babbitt.

Ingrid V. Melovasich, 86, of Ely, dies

Ingrid V. Melovasich, 86, a lifelong resident of Ely, passed away on Friday, July 3, 2015 at the Boundary Waters Care Center in Ely. She passed away peacefully into the arms of her Lord.
Violet was a mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who truly treasured the many family gatherings, especially the times with her grandchildren. She enjoyed her friends and special evenings with her girlfriends and the Ely Sewing Club. Violet loved to knit and spend time with her sister LaVerne and husband Bob.

Lorraine Korpi, 84, of Ely, dies

Lorraine Frances (Klun) Korpi, 84, of Ely passed away at the Boundary Waters Care Center on Tuesday, June 30, 2015. She was born to Joseph and Mary Klun on March 26, 1931 in Ely.

She was raised in Ely and graduated from Ely Memorial High School.

She married Kenneth Korpi in 1955. She worked at the Klun Grocery Store for many years retiring in 1995.

Lorraine is survived by her nephew Geno (Joellyn) Klun along with many other loving nieces, nephew and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Kenneth Korpi and her brother Stanley.

A memorial mass will be held on Monday, July 6 at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Ely at 11 a.m. with visitation being held an hour earlier. A luncheon will follow at the church.
Lorraine will be buried at Fort Snelling, next to Kenneth.

Family arrangements have been entrusted to Kerntz Funeral Home of Ely.

Helen Swanson, 88, of Babbitt, dies

Helen M Swanson, 88 of Babbitt, died peacefully and went to be with her Lord on June 21, 2015. She was born July 2, 1926 in Oak Park, Minnesota to Henning and Alma (Check) Lindell. Helen graduated from Foley High School April 23, 1945. On April 23, 1946, she married Lester Swanson at Maywood Covenant Church in Foley, Minnesota. Helen was a homemaker, mother, grandmother and a great-grandmother. She was a member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Babbitt and a Ruth Circle member and a Senior Citizen Club member. She will be sadly missed by her son Larry (Nancy) Swanson of Babbitt, Rick (Flossie) Swanson of Alaska and Lonnie (Kathy) Swanson of Alaska, her 14 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, 2 great-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lester in 1992 and her daughter, Suzanne in 2014.Funeral Services will be held on Friday, June 26, 2015 at 11:00 A.M.

Jon Frans Hakala, 59, of Ely dies

Jon Frans Hakala, 59, of Ely passed away on Friday, June 19, 2015 surrounded by his loving family.
Jon was born on February 28, 1956 in Virginia to Adolph and Martha Hakala. He was raised in Aurora and graduated from Aurora High School and attended Northland Community College and Vermilion Community College with an A.A.S. in Natural Resources. Jon was employed by the U.S.F.S. since 1976. He worked in the Superior National Forest.
He married Joanne Patricia Walker on April 8, 1989.
Jon is survived by his wife Joanne, his children: Jennifer, Janelle and Jon Patrick Hakala and his sister: Kathy (Dennis) Miller and his faithful companion Jagger and many loving nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother: Jack Hakala.
