Alice S. Prijatel, 67, of Ely, dies

Alice S. Prijatel, 67, of Ely died peacefully at home on Thursday, April 2, 2015, surrounded by her family.
She was born to Einard and Irene Nikkinen on October 19, 1947.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her brother Robert Nikkinen; her mother-in-law Evelyn Prijatel; and her father-in-law Joseph Prijatel.
Alice is survived by her husband Joe; daughters: Chris (Doy) Ousley of Rapid City, SD; Becky (Chris) Swanson of Rochester, MN; and Pam Prijatel (Lee Omdahl) of Ely; grandchildren: Kiriana Marsh, Zach Alto, Tanner Alto, Tyler Maki, Jackson Maki, Abigail Maki and Mackenna Omdahl; great-grandson Ryan Abold-Alto; brothers-in-law: Jerry (Carol) Prijatel of Melrose, MN; Michael (Toni) Prijatel of Owatonna, MN and Peter (Cec) Prijatel of Virginia; nieces, cousins and special friends. She is also survived by her best friend and walking companion, Burntside.

Steven Lee Petersen, 65, died March 27, 2015, born August 13, 1950. Memorial service will be held 10:30 a.m on Friday, April 24 2015 at Fort Snelling Chapel, 9031 Penn Ave S, Bloomington, MN with internment in Fort Snelling National Cemetery.

Shirley DeNio, 78, of Ely, dies

Shirley A. DeNio, 78, of Ely, died Sunday, March 29, 2015 at Boundary Waters Care Center.
She was born May 29, 1936 in Nashwauk, MN to Joseph and Nettie (Kanieski) Gangl. Shirley married William E. DeNio on June 14, 1952. They moved to Ely in 1957. She worked as head housekeeper at Burntside Lodge. She went on to work as a bartender at the Ely Moose Lodge and Fortune Bay Casino, Later, she worked at Lucky Seven as a cashier.
She loved crafts, reading, baking, playing cribbage, and doing word search puzzles. She especially enjoyed playing Bingo at the Senior Center with her daughter, Jean, but, mostly, Shirley cherished time spent with her family.
Survivors include her son, Roy (Sue) DeNio of Ironton; Scott, Lynn, Jean, and Todd, all of Ely; grandchildren: Shannon, Joshua of Hilo, HI; Jonas (Desire) of Frazee; Kayla (Kyle) of Richfield, MN; Amanda of Hilo, HI; Abigail; great-grandson Elaijah of Richfield, MN and brother Les (Gail) Gangl of Nashwauk, MN.

Gerald W. Shallman, 82, dies

Gerald (Jerry) William Shallman, 82, died peacefully and surrounded by family on Saturday, March 28th at Carefree Living in Ely, Mn.
Born (Dec. 27, 1932) and raised in the Aitkin, MN area, he was the only child of Oscar and Ida (Mattsen) Shallman.
Jerry loved to read, hike, and spend time with his family and friends. He liked good music and a friendly game of cribbage.
Jerry also enjoyed a good cup of coffee and socializing. He made many friends everywhere he went. One of his favorite spots was World’s Best Donuts in Grand Marais, MN, where he earned the nickname, “Day Brightener”. He could walk into coffee shops in many towns, hear “Good Morning, Jerry” and have his favorite drink handed across the counter with a smile.

LaVeryn Kosir, 91, formerly of Ely, dies

LaVeryn Kosir, 91, formerly of Ely, died at St. Michael’s Health and Rehabilitation Center in Virginia on Wednesday, March 25, 2015.
She was born on Dec. 8, 1923, to Rudolph and Winifred Halamik in Ely. LaVeryn graduated from Ely Memorial High School Class of 1941 and attended Ely Junior College before graduating from the Registered Nursing program at St. Scholastica in 1946. LaVeryn worked at St. Mary’s Medical Center in Duluth until her marriage to Rudolph Joseph Kosir on Sept. 18, 1947, in California. The couple returned to Ely in 1949 and started Kosir Construction, where LaVeryn took care of all the bookkeeping. LaVeryn was an avid bowler and belonged to the Ely Bowling League. She was also a member of the Women’s Life Association.

Daniel Armstrong, 43, of Ely, dies

Daniel Armstrong, 43, of Ely, passed away Tuesday, March 24, 2015 at the Boundary Waters Care Center in Ely.
Daniel Joseph Armstrong, 43, of Ely went to heaven early Tuesday evening, March 24, 2015. He was born and grew up in Lindstrom, MN area. He attended Vermilion Community College for Waste Water Management. After graduating and working in a couple metro communities, he returned to Ely, the community he loved. Dan has happily been with the Ely Water Department since 2000. He and his wife, Jennifer and children: Keisha, Anthony and Angel have been active members of the Ely community. Dan loved his family, the outdoors, his dogs and had a special interest in shooting sports and conservation. He loved everything that allowed him to be outside, especially gardening, fishing, and hunting.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Charlene and Gerald (Jerry) Armstrong.

Joseph Smoley, 89, of Ely, died Sat. March 21, 2015 in Boundary Waters Care Center, Ely. Joe’s wish was for a simple private Inurnment, which will be honored later this spring. Arrangements are with Kerntz Funeral Home in Ely.

Lavern M. Gorecki, 82, of Babbitt, died Fri. March 20, 2015 in Boundary Waters Care Center, Ely. Visitation will be from 5-7 PM Thursday in Kerntz Funeral Home, Ely and Friday from 10 AM until the 11 AM Mass of Christian Burial in St. Pius Catholic Church, Babbitt.

Elizabeth Ann (Betty) Zollar, 78, dies

Elizabeth Ann (Betty) Zollar, 78, of Ely, died Monday, March 16, 2015 in the Ely-Bloomenson Community Hospital.
She was born in Ely, where she lived most of her life and attended the Ely schools. She graduated from Ely Memorial High in 1954. She also attended Minnesota School of Business and worked at Northland Greyhound in Minneapolis.
In May of 1958, Elizabeth married Robert J. Zollar. They had two children. She also worked at the First National Bank of Ely, Zenith Mining Company, Independent School District #696, and Vermilion Community College where she earned her Associate of Art Degree in 1989. She retired from Vermilion in December of 1993.
Betty was a member of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, Woman’s Life Insurance Society, American Fraternal Union, and Ely Golf Assn.
