Dr. Carl White, summer resident, dies

Dr. Carl White, noted cardiologist, died on Wednesday, Oct. 22 after perservering through Alzheimer’s disease. Survivors include his wife, Barbara and three children. The Whites are summer residents of Burntside Lake’s west end. A memorial service is planned for 10 a.m., Monday, Oct. 27 at Plymouth Congregational Church in Minneapolis.

Matt (Sonny) Vertin Jr., 80, of Ely dies

Matt (Sonny) Vertin Jr., 80, of Ely passed away Monday, October 20, 2014 at the Solvay Hospice House in Duluth.
He was born February 22, 1934 in Ely to Matt and Angela (Zupancich) Vertin and was a lifelong Ely resident.
Sonny was married for 62 years to Gloria (DeBernardi) and they owned and operated Vertin’s Cafe and Pub, a local iconic establishment in Ely.
During the years of operating the restaurant, he employed many people from the surrounding area and always strived for everyone to reach their highest potential. Sonny could be found at the restaurant at any time of the day sitting at his table with a coffee cup and always ready to give his opinion or stock trading tips.

John Lekatz Sr., 96, of Ely dies

John Lekatz, Sr., 96, of Ely, passed away peacefully in his sleep at his residence on Tuesday, October 21, 2014.
He was the last living child of nine children born in Ely to Mike Lekatz and Katherine Maranich. In 1943 he married Frances Melovasich. Together, John and Frannie raised three children: John (Mary Ann) Lekatz, Jr.; Frank (Jan) Lekatz, and Louise (Andy) Kainz, all of Ely. John worked for the City of Ely for many years, initially as a police officer and later in Public Works.
In addition to his children, he is survived by grandchildren: Carol (Jim) Rist, Cheryl (Derek) Grochowski and David (Missy) Lekatz; four great grandchildren: Morgan and Joshua Rist and Kayla and Matt Lekatz;, and his little dog “Kiki.” He was pre-deceased by an infant daughter, his wife Fran in 2009, and brothers: Paul, Peter, Joe, Louis, Mike and Steve Lekatz; sisters: Ann Royal and Katherine Beaty.

Eleanor M. Bialke, 90, of Babbitt, dies

Eleanor M. Bialke, 90, of Babbitt, passed away on Saturday, October 18, 2014 at the Boundary Waters Care Center in Ely. Eleanor was born on May 5, 1924 in Gilman to Frank and Catherine (Pulchinski) Albright. She married Thomas P. Bialke on May 2, 1944 in Gilman. Eleanor enjoyed cooking, fishing, playing cards and spending time with her family.
She’s survived by her husband: Thomas; their children: Gerald Bialke of Babbitt and Reinette (Joe) Labernik of Forest Lake; grandchildren: Aaron, Brad, Chris, Shannon, Tracy and Katrina; 11 great grandchildren: Caleb, Logan, Peyton, Colton, Calvin, Lily, Janie, Addison, Ella, Mason and Arie Anna; sister-in-laws: Cleo Bialke and Janet Albright; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Eleanor was preceded in death by her parents, her daughter: Cheryl Gerold; brothers: Henry and Donald Albright; and sister: Ann Albright.

Luella C. Anderson, 93, dies

Luella C. Anderson, 93, of Ely, formerly of Babbitt, died Monday, Oct. 20, 2014, in hospice care at Boundary Waters Care Center.

Luella was born May 17, 1921, in Underwood, Minn., to Clarence and Mathilda Flom. Luella grew up in Underwood, Minn. Luella married Ford G. Murray in May 1940 in St. Paul, and during World War II and after, lived in the Ashland, Wis., and St. Paul areas.

Dorothy J. Anderson, 83, died Thursday, Oct. 16, 2014, at Essentia Health Care Center in Virginia. She was born Oct. 18, 1930, in Winton to John and Irene (Toratti) Juhola and graduated from Embarrass High School in 1948. Funeral services will be held Monday, Oct. 20, 2014, at Gethsemane Lutheran Church at 10 a.m. with visitation one hour prior.

Tony A. Stalcar, 56 of Richfield, MN dies

Tony A. Stalcar, 56 of Richfield, MN passed away on October 14, 2014.  Born November 15, 1957 in Winton, MN. A 23 year employee of Hospira Inc. who was preceded in death by father, Jack Stalcar.  Survived by loving wife of 26 years, Kay; children: Jeremy (Katie), Derek and Nicole; mother Helga Stalcar; six siblings and numerous other loving family and friends.  Memorial Service Tuesday, October 21, 2014 at 11 a.m. at Richfield Lutheran Church, 60th Street and Nicollet Ave., Minneapolis, MN.  Visitation Monday, October 20 from 4-8 p.m. with a Time of Remembrance at 7 p.m. at Morris Nilsen Chapel, 6527 Portland Ave. S.  Richfield, MN.  Private Interment.

James L. Heikkila, 71, of Babbitt, dies

James L. Heikkila, 71, of Babbitt, died Tuesday, Sept. 30, 2014, at St. Raphael’s Health & Rehabilitation Center in Eveleth. He  was born June 30, 1943, in Ely and was employed at Reserve Mining Co. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 6, 2014, at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Babbitt.

Thomas K. Rayman, 66, of Ely, dies

Thomas Keil Rayman was taken “Home” on Thursday, October 2, 2014 in Ely. He was born in Austin, MN on March 14, 1948 to Dr. Frederick Rayman Jr. and Jacqueline (Callies) Rayman.
Thomas graduated from Austin High School in 1966 and later earned degrees in Psychology and Biology from Winona State. Thomas was an Eagle Scout. He loved to read and had written a letter to one of his favorite authors, C.S. Lewis, and was quite pleased to receive a letter in return. He was a lover of the theater and acted in many plays throughout his lifetime. He also enjoyed swimming, soccer and fencing as a young man.

Rodney K. Johnson, of Ely, dies

Rodney K. Johnson, 84, passed away peacefully at home in Ely on Friday, September 26. He was born in Duluth, MN, October 30, 1929, to John E. and A. Mabel (Isaacson) Johnson.  
He grew up in several states but also spent many childhood years with his grandparents, Jacob and Marie Johnson in Ely and at the homestead on Johnson Lake.  Rodney graduated Denfeld High School, Duluth, MN, and later acquired his knowledge for a successful electrical career, graduating from Dunwoody Institute, Minneapolis, MN.  He willingly provided for his wife and children during their time at home.  Later, he attended and graduated Robert Tilton’s Bible School, Dallas, TX.  Rodney opened a Bible Satellite School in the old Ely Theatre, and was ordained with his wife through the Association of Faith Churches and Ministries, Broken Arrow, OK, August, 1984.  They started the Ely Word Church and he served as senior pastor until his illness forced a sabbatical.
