He was a member of First Lutheran Church in Ely, MN.

He was joined in marriage to Enola Nelson on June 25, 1955. Don enjoyed his vocations as husband, father, papa, and engineer. He was employed at Precise Products, partner of his own company, Kinetic Manufacturing Inc., Geo. Meyer, Allis Chalmers and Rausch Construction. He took pride in the various projects he led during his career: from installing the first bottling project using plastic soda bottles, to Project Manager-Vice President of a Coal Gasification project for Allis Chalmers, to holding patents he designed and built for a water-cooled high-speed spindle for the circuit board industry, to raising some of the finest beef cows in the state of Wisconsin.

He also volunteered his time as a Sunday school teacher along with being the Sunday School superintendent. While in Ely he enjoyed serving on various church boards, but mostly being part of the Vacation Bible School program where he could share his love of photography and capturing and sharing the images on film.

He enjoyed pheasant hunting and training his beloved golden retrievers, even going on to train and show a National Bench and Field Champion.

He loved fishing, especially after moving to Ely. The friendships he made while casting a line were some of his most memorable and cherished. From starting at the bait shop to ending with a fish fry. Never a bad day fishing.
