Ely girls open holiday event with 73-31 rout

Ely’s high school girls basketball team got the start it was looking for in the holiday tournament.The Timberwolves were never challenged by visiting Silver Bay and blew out the Mariners 73-31 to open play in the 13th annual event.Ely bounced back from a tough loss to unbeaten Cotton, got back over .500 at 3-2, and gained some momentum for the next two days of the tournament.Nine Wolves scored, with Tomi McDonald and Kelsey Ivancich doing much of the damage.They combined for 42 points and eight three-pointers, hitting four bombs apiece.McDonald, a sophomore, had a game-high 24 points and combined long-distance shooting with some good work inside. Ivancich added 18 points, her high total for the season.Junior Barb Klun had perhaps the best overall game for the Wolves, coming up with eight points, eight assists and nine rebounds, just missing a triple-double.Kathleen Omerza added nine points, Kayla Peterson finished with four and Kaytie Spangler added three points for the Wolves.Maria Michalski had 12 points for Silver Bay (1-5).Earlier in the day, Eveleth-Gilbert started the tournament with a 64-34 win over Cromwell.The Timberwolves met Cromwell Thursday and Eveleth-Gilbert Friday in tournament action. After a break, they return to the court for a Jan. 5 home date with Mesabi East.
