Giants swim past NRE

Mesabi East piled up points early and cruised to a 97-69 victory over visiting Northeast Range/Ely, in a Sept. 10 high school girls swimming meet at Aurora.
The Giants won most of the individual and relay events, with one-two finishes in three of the first four events to take control of the dual meet.
Lily Tedrick had NRE’s only contested individual win, dominating the 200 yard freestyle in 2:20.03 and winning with almost six seconds to spare.
Later, Tedrick teamed with Morgan McClelland Cedar Ohlhauser and Kelly Thompson on a 400 freestyle relay unit that finished first in 4:26.76.
McClelland bagged a pair of runner-up showings, taking second in both the 100 freestyle and 100 backstroke, with times of 1:05.98 and 1:18.54, respectively.
The Nighthawks also scored points as follows:
• 200 medley relay - 3. Esther Anderson, McKenna Coughlin, McClelland, Alice Wolter, 2:28.71;
• 50 freestyle -3. Thompson, 30.47;
• 100 butterfly - 3. Tedrick, 1:11.89;
• 100 freestyle - 3. Thompson, 1:06.37;
• 500 freestyle - 2. Ohlhauser, 6:49.47;
• 200 freestyle relay - 1. Anna Larson, Thompson, Ohlhauser, Tedrick, 2:01.20; 2. Maggie Dammann, Ava Sundell, Coughlin, Wolter, 2:15.58;
• 100 backstroke - 3. Anderson, 1:21.80; 4. Dammann, 1:30.28;
• 100 breaststroke - 1. Cavalier, 1:46.02;
• 400 freestyle relay - 2. Larson, Wolter, Emma Fedders, Anderson, 5:05.46.
JV action
Mesabi East won the junior varsity contest 85-62, with NRE JV winners including
• 200 medley relay - Tuuli Kovisto, Via DeBeltz, Grace Sundell, Rose Schlosser;
• 400 freestyle relay - Grace Sundell, Dammann, Ava Sundell, Coughlin;
• 100 backstroke - Koivisto;
• 100 breaststroke - DeBeltz.
The Nighthawks hosted Duluth Denfeld Thursday, after deadline, and follow up with a Sept. 24 meet at Chisholm.
Cloquet visits the Babbitt pool for a Sept. 26 meet, but home events remain closed to the public because of state restrictions related to entering school buildings during the COVID-19 pandemic.
