Girls fifth at Hibbing meet

Ely’s high school girls track team was in the middle of the pack at Tuesday’s meet in Hibbing. The Timberwolves were fifth in the nine-team event, with Ali Schulze and Jen Zupancich leading the way.Schulze, a senior, placed second in the 400 meter dash with a time of 1:03.30, while sophomore Zupancich took second in the 200 meter dash (26.80 seconds) and third in the high jump (four feet, eight inches). And the Wolves may have had an individual win in the 300 hurdles had it not been for a late fall by sophomore Carolyn Freeman.“She was ahead for the entire race,“ said Ely Head Coach Todd Hohenstein. “She was pushing to go for one of her best times and she just caught a toe on one of the last hurdles and ended up going down. Still, she popped right up and got a third place.”Freeman was third in 52.7 seconds, two seconds off the pace set by winner Kelsey Peterson of Grand Rapids. In the 400, Schulze was less than a second behind Stacey Peterson of Eveleth-Gilbert. Hibbing’s Christin Cimermancic edged Zupancich in the 200 by three-tenths of a second. “Jen is getting close to section and state standards (with a time of 26.8),” said Hohenstein. The Wolves’ Casey Sovil took third in the 800 run in 2:34.10, while Ely also had a third-place 1,600 relay (members names not available) that completed the course in 4:24.10.In the 3,200 relay, Amelia Donars, Kit Anderson, Barb Klun and Jenna Klein teamed to take fourth in 11:01.Ely also scored in the following events:• 100 hurdles - 6. Zupancich, 13.3; 7. Freeman, 18.2;• Mile run - 4. Sovil, 5:56;• Triple jump - 8. Tomi McDonald, 28-7.5.“I thought we did pretty well on what was kind of a blustery day,” said Hohenstein.
